“One could stay here indefinitely!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2012

We picked Candlewood Suites based on the ratings, which were higher than Embassy Suites, and what appeared to be a competitive price, and we were well rewarded for our efforts. We were impressed by the size of the room, and the fact there was a real full-sized refrigerator in the suite. It was more like an apartment-sized kitchen, rather than the bare minimums you usually get. The staff was courteous and helpful, and the location in close proximity to PDX and Cascade Station is a real plus. Shari's restaurant is a 2-block walk away, or you've got the rest of Portland if you like. We would definitely try and stay here again next time we come through.

“Candlewood Suites - a good discovery for us”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2012

When in Portland, I usually stay at the Ramada on Stark St because it is near my brother's house but they didn't 't have room availability. I had never heard of Candlewood Suites but, based on the positive reviews and the fact that we like the extra room in suite hotels, we decided to give it a try. The hotel is fairly new - we were told it is about 2 1/2 years old. I guess this is considered a budget suites hotel. Housekeeping services are only provided once a week. We stayed there for 3 nights so this wasn't a problem for us. Guest do have the option to get clean towels (bedding, too, I guess) at the front desk. The front desk staff were efficient and very friendly. There are 2 computers in the lobby for guests to use.

Our suite with 2 queen beds was not real large but the kitchen was well equipped with a full size fridge, microwave, stove top, dishwasher, toaster, dishes, pans, etc. The air conditioner was fairly quiet and worked well. The bed was comfortable. The window opened a few inches. Wi-Fi was fine. The flat screen TV was small and the picture wasn't very good.

Bathroom: It was nice to have a cabinet with a drawer and space to store things under the sink. The showerhead was basic but good. The countertop was quite high, which was a plus for us but could be a problem for small children. The shampoo was a combination shampoo/conditioner which I don't usually like but this product worked ok on my hair. The bathroom fan was VERY loud but there were lights that were not connected to the fan so we didn't have listen to the fan every time we used the bathroom.

The beds have a "sign" on the pillows that says that you are given 3 standard pillows but that you can exchange them for a firmer pillow or a feather pillow. When I tried to get a firmer pillow, I was told that none were available. The desk clerk was very apologetic but, if they don't have a good supply of the optional pillows, I don't think they should offer the options.

There aren't many restaurants nearby. The last time we stayed near the airport, we had dinner at Shari's, which I did not like at all. If you don't want to cook in your suite because you just have a short stay or just don't feel like cooking, one option is to walk (or drive) to the nearby Courtyard by Marriott hotel. Their restaurant is really intended for people staying at that hotel but anyone can eat there. The food is a little pricey but fairly high quality with some healthy options. They have breakfast and dinner. Breakfast offerings (which you can get "to go") include oatmeal with berries & nuts and a healthy breakfast sandwich with egg whites, turkey Canadian bacon, cheese & spinach on an English muffin.

Following our first stay (which was reviewed above), we returned to the Candlewood Suites the following weekend and stayed 3 nights in a king suite. Considering that it was called a suite, it was quite small but it was ok. My biggest complaint about the king suite was that there were only 2 sets of dishes - 2 large plates, 2 small plates, 2 coffee mugs, etc. If 2 people stayed there for an extended stay & ate in frequently, they would be washing dishes a lot. I didn't realize when we stayed in the queen suite that there were more dishes because there could be 4 people staying in the suite.

Overall, we were happy with our 2 weekends at the Candlewood Suites and would definitely consider staying there again.

“High rating not deserved”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2012

I'm staying here right now. The room is ok. Airplane noise, room not refreshed daily, night desk clerk has argued with me and others I've noticed. Waited over 30 minutes the other night for the shuttle at the airport, the night deskclerk kept telling me it was coming in 5 to 10 min....3 times. A highly rated hotel here, that is this way, makes me question the validity of tripadvisor.

Room Tip: Get a room on the opposite side of the landing strip.

“friendly and helpful staff, wonderful room, a "home" away from home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2012

We stayed in this hotel for 2 nights to explore Portland and the surrounding area. We had the room on the top floor (5th floor) so we did not have the specific noise issue (i.e., guests walking in rooms above us) as some reviewers commented (more about this below).

The room was clean, spacious, with a full sized refrigerator and a kitchen. We instantly felt comfortable and at home. We actually brought food with us (in a cooler) and cook our own meals in the room, making full use of what the room had to offer.

The hotel location is away from the downtown area but one could walk to a light rail station (approximately 1 mile walk) or take the hotel shuttle to the airport and then take the light rail into the city; we drove and used Google Maps to help us navigate to the hotel without any problem (did our homework first). The hotel had a business office with two computers each connected to a printer. We were able to use the computer to find out how to get to a specific location from the hotel and printed out the instruction to bring with us (all free of charge!). This was wonderful as we did not bring a computer with us and although all hotels we stayed had free internet service, none, except for this one, provided a computer for us to use the internet.

Although there was no restaurant near by, we ordered food to be delivered to our room from a nearby restaurant. The hotel provided menu for a couple of close by restaurants that delivered food and it was a great help to us. The restaurant from which we ordered food only delivered if you order over $20; it may be a problem for a single guest to order that much. Also, you should call the restaurant to check the price for each dish as the menu in the hotel might be out of date.

The staff members were friendly, helpful and courteous and we appreciate this very much (we talked to several of them and all were nice).

Regarding noise, we did notice that the air conditioning unit and the refrigerator in our room both generated noises which could be distracting at night. We simply turned off the air conditioning unit but had to bear the refrigerator noise. After all, it was a full-sized refrigerator, which generated as much noise as our own at home, except that our home refrigerator was in the kitchen and this one was in the same room with the bed. You cannot have it both way. We also could hear clearly the shower turned on and off in our neighbouring unit; it did not bother us but made us aware that our noise could affect our neighbours (we returned late and use our bathroom late into the night). We had a very quiet neighbour (we had the corner room 501) so our concern was about avoiding bothering our neighbour (as opposed to the other way around).

Overall, we had an awesome experience at Candlewood and would definitely return if we come this way again.

Room Tip: pick a room on 5th floor to minimize the noise (such as people walking above you)

Dear ChinS988,

Thank you so much for your extensive review of our hotel at the Portland International Airport. We appreciate you mentioning the cleanliness and spaciousness of our rooms. We enjoy the opportunity to keep your "home away from home" as clean as possible. The full kitchens do allow you the comfort of cooking your own meals in the comfort of your room. If you are wanting to go out for dinner, our front desk staff can refer you to 2 restaurants within walking distance and over 20 less than 3 miles from the hotel. Also, our shuttle can take you to Cascade Station 24 hours a day to such restaurants as Red Robin, Buffalo Wilds Wings, Famous Daves BBQ and IHOP (open 24 hours). We look forward to hosting you again soon. Thank you.

“Convenient & comfortable for week stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2012

Very clean, possibly new with conveniences of home in a suite. Convenient back entrance to Cascade Station shops and near Parkway park & ride for easy & economical access via Trimax to downtown. Although under runway approach, didn't realize until using car park. Best option if you have a car and use economical rail service as all freeways seem to have permanent traffic jams. Note there isn't daily room service, but with a dishwasher it is possible to really relax. Towels etc can be exchanged at front desk when needed.

Room Tip: No pool if you need one for kids.

Dear JanCowan,

Thank you so much for your informative review of our Candlewood Suites Portland Airport Extended Stay Hotel. We appreciate your feedback and insight. I am happy you touched on the cleanliness of our hotel as we have been open for nearly 3 years, however, still look new. In an attempt to reduce waste and to offer our guests rest during their stay we do only offer a weekly housekeeping service, however, you are correct that you can exhange or replace items at the front desk at any time 24 hours a day. While we do not have an onsite pool (to decrease noise) we do have a local partnership with Cascade Athletic Club where you can purchase day passes to use their pool, spa and any other facilities at their Club. Thank you and we look forward to hosting you again soon.

Kindest Regards,

Nathan Storms
