Owner description: Considered the most authentic Japanese Garden outside of Japan, the Portland Japanese Garden is a haven of tranquil beauty in all seasons. Throughout the year, the Garden offers arts and culture exhibitions, festivals, educational programs, and horticultural workshops. A must-see when visiting the Pacific NW United States.

“Not as pretty late Sept/Oct”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2013

I'm afraid I'm spoiled growing up in the SF Bay Area. I like the SF Japanese Garden much more than this one. Now I must also caveat this rating by the time of year we visited. We were here in Early October. The leaves weren't quite changing yet and it wasn't springtime when things are blossoming. The colors were rather flat and monotone.

It does seem like a great place to meditate. Numerous spots to reflect quietly.

There is a little complimentary shuttle bus that can drive you up from the main parking lot by the tennis courts to the entrance. You can also walk up the hill.

A local Portlander also told me that these gardens are OK in their point of view as well and not a must-do when visiting. Unless of course, you've never been to a Japanese Garden ever.

Amazing place, quiet, peaceful just outside the city. It is a must see for anyone, it's worth going and walk from the zoo to the gardens it's a great walk through the woods.

“Spectacular!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2013

This garden, located in the heart of Portland, Oregon is none less than the title of this article states. The peace that you are immersed in is almost overwhelming. As soon as you enter you see nothing but peaceful plant life and water art. It is quiet and the air is cool and refreshing. As you stroll down the path all the other people you cross have the same expression of contentment from their busy hectic day out in the every day world. There are lots of places you can sit and enjoy a quiet conversation with a friend or just enjoy the sounds of the birds that drop by unannounced.

I do suggest that you come to see for yourselves.

“beauty not far from downtown”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2013

The park is elegantly designed and beautifully maintained. Each area displays art, or design on a world-class scale. Definitely a place to visit...especially if the weather is nice. Because most of the experience is outside, bring an umbrella if it's going to rain. Even rainy days had a mystery of their own.
