“Nice general art museum”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2010

It isn't a museum with tons of big name artists but it is very nice and I loved the bright color scheme on the walls. Northwest culture exhibits are excellent. Very nice gift shop with reasonable gifts and books.
Current Crumb exhibit of a comic book depiction of the Book of Genesis was really interesting and should not be missed. Docent said it was a bit irreverant but I didn't find it offensive.

“Great contemporary art collection...staff is engaging.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2010

Took 5 hours to go through the contemporary art collection...would need another day to look at the other collections and the exhibits.

We were enjoying ourselves walking through...very quiet...not busy on a Saturday.

One of the attendents in the exhibits engaged us in some conversation about some of the pieces. He gave us some suggestions as to what pieces to see.

Nice museum, not overwhelming. Had a very pleasant afternoon for a $12 admission fee.

“Nice Little Museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2009

You're not going to find Rembrandts and Van Goghs here. But it is a nice museum that takes about 2-3 hours to tour. Their collection includes American, native American, asian ceramics, and even some renaissance and medieval art. The museum was hosting a traveling exhibit of modern chinese art when we visited. The museum is convenient to public transportation, and a short walk from pioneer square.

Some Saturdays there is a farmers market down the street that is also a worthwhile stop.

“Portland Understands the Art of Film”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2009

You've got to give it to the Portland Art Museum for diversity. While lesser art museums might confine themselves to curating shows straight out of an art history book, the Portland Art Museum keeps it's artistic eye on the here, the now, and the just around the corner. Not only are they running a great exhibit on current Chinese architecture and design, but they also service the Northwest Film Center whose mission is, you guessed it, the promotion of film as an art form. Offering a rich palette of domestic and international films, the film center is an absolute dream for any cineaste. The fact that their current program actually serves to supplement the Chinese design show suggests to me that the Portland Art Museum and the Northwest Film Center are a perfect example of symbiotic artistic vision. I'd recommend taking at least a day to wander the galleries of the museum, and at least a lifetime to catch all the amazing films on exhibition. The Portland Art Museum should be the first stop on any savvy travelers agenda in this great town.

“A Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2009

We went there to kill time and fell in love with it. Not many "Bigggies" but many small Wows! Building itself is interesting and lovely. I especially loved the Chinese and Native American exhibits
