We took a day trip while staying in Portland by driving east along the scenic highway (84) to Hood River. There were several restaurants and cafés there so we had lunch and checked out some of the shops. Then we drove along part of what's called the "Fruit Loop", south of Hood River, visiting some wineries, stopping at fruit stands and trying some hard cider at one stop. On our way back to Portland we took the old highway US 30 which splits off 84, and were able to see Multnomah Falls and several other smaller falls. Maps of the Fruit Loop with listings of wineries, orchards, etc., are available at hotels and visitor centers.
