“Romantic Old Style Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

I booked this trip as a surprise for my boyfriend for his birthday, and as such I was looking for a hotel that had a little more too it than your usual "cheap & cheerful". We loved The Benson, from the gorgeous lobby to the friendly staff we really enjoyed our trip.

The tempurpedic beds are amazing! All hotels should do this, we slept so well. We ate a couple of times in the Palm Court and the food was great (best clam chowder ever!) the location is great and very central.

We had only one issue and it's not a big one, but when housekeeping had been they didn't replace the coffee which we didn't notice until the next day. We both love our coffee first thing, we were a little grumpy!

We would definitely stay here again and would recommend it to anyone else too.

I enjoyed my stay and the catering for the meeting lunch was excellent. I won't rate value since I wasn't paying. I stayed two nights and my room was not serviced until late in the day because they prioritize checkouts to turn rooms around. However, the service of staff throughout the hotel is excellent, so if you need it done earlier they are very accommodating. The staff are very polite, friendly, and helpful. Overall very classy hotel!

Room Tip: Rooms on Broadway have a little bit of noise from clubs below.

Last month I spent two nights at the Benson Hotel in Portland, Oregon. Although I was there on business it felt more like a vacation! The rooms were impeccably clean, the staff was exceedingly attentive and helpful, and the location cannot be beat (just a short walk to restaurants, and Powell's)! If you have reason to go to Portland, this is the place to stay.

Room Tip: All the rooms are great, although try to get a higher floor for the best view!

OK, so I haven't stayed anywhere else, but after staying there my first trip to Portland, I see no need to venture to other hotels. I love this hotel. Classy, yet not stuffy. No noses in the air here, just wonderful service and beautiful rooms. Make sure you have a drink at the Palm Club and meet the bartender. He is the best!

While I like the ambiance of an old world luxury, it seems the place is ...well.... old..
The rooms are cosy/quaint (small) and the water pipes make a bit of a racket, as do the garbage collectors down in the street. Most hotels have upgraded their windows to double pane glass, but this one retains the old world charm of hearing everything that goes on down in the street, and down the hall... and in the water pipes.
Don't get me wrong, this was really a good experience overall and I would definitely return for the special old world style and totally relaxing environment.
Whatever you do, you must try the halibut at the bar... get the NW sampler which has a smaller, more tender and very delicious piece of battered and fried Halibut... much better than the large chunk from the entree. I tried both, and then ordered 3 pieces of the appetizer by themselves, there was such a difference.

Only stayed for one night, but was very impressed and satisfied. Beautiful hotel, great location. Nice friendly helpful staff. It is in a great location and accommodated this Seattle girls girl's weekend. Our train left at 2 and extending check-out by one hour was not an issue. Thank you team Benson!

Our visit to the Benson was our first visit. We had heard about its reputation and expected to arrive at a first class hotel but we had no idea that we were going to have probably the best hotel stay experience we ever had. We have stayed in lots of beautiful hotels before, even five star but we never experienced a more friendly and helpful staff. The history, the gorgeous Walnut walls and columns, the Italian Marble, the beautiful bar and excellent breakfast buffet for $15 and generous drinks served in the bar and the more than friendly staff really made our stay the best. We will make the Benson Hotel our first choice in Portland and give it the highest recommendation to our friends.
