“Beautiful home in convenient location.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013

Stayed for 9 nights for our vacation. Beautifully presented Victorian with beautiful furniture. Room was kind of tight but comfortable with queen bed. However we spent most of our waking time at the Lion and Rose in the common areas. It seems as if great B&B's bring in great people. The breakfasts are superb and although not scheduled it seems as if the 8:30 seating is when everyone sits down for a hearty start to the day. 5 minute walk to the tram and 2 blocks to many nice restaurants and bars. Parking is on street but never parked more than 2 blocks away.

Lion and the Rose B & B was fabulous. We stayed in the Lavonna Room, which had a sleep number bed and was so comfortable. We rented the extra bathroom that had a clawfoot tub, had a wonderful bubblebath in it. The staff are outstanding.

Room Tip: Lavonna Room has a wonderful turret to it. Lovely views.

I had friends coming to visit for just the day when we were visiting Portland. The common areas were perfect for pairing up and having separate conversations. The manager there was great, very nice and eager to please. In all we were quite pleased.

We've stayed here before and find it quite enjoyable. The building dates back to 1906 as I recall and has been updated with en-suite bathrooms in most of the guest rooms and fully furnished with period furniture and decor. Even off season, the price is a little steep but it's a wonderful place. In prime season the price is out of our reach so we must go elsewhere in those months.

When you reserve, you reserve a specific room and all rooms are different so be sure to read the website for the specific room info. They are all furnished and decorated in the early 1900's motif but are different sizes and have different bathroom configurations. Like many "period" B&B's some of the beds are quite high, requiring a step stool (1900's polished wood) to ascend to the bed top.

The rooms now also all seem to have an LCD TV (sometimes a small one) and wireless internet. However, finding someplace to plug in your lap top and all those chargers one is forced to carry around these days can be challenging.

The decor is wonderfully charming in the early 1900's Victorian style (if that's your thing). Very tastefully done and the entire establishment is brimming with nick-knacks and what not from the period - all very well done. Every time we stay there I wind up doing a double take on the cats curled up at the top and bottom of the front stairway. They are not real though even though they are very life like.

All the rooms have standalone, floor standing, A/C units vented through a nearby window in case needed. As we're only there off season we've never had a need to turn one on though. The regular heat is through radiators and is adequate and surprisingly quiet for such heat type (no rattling, hissing, or banging as I recall from such devices when I was in college in Boston). The rooms also each have a small space heater in case needed (we have yet to need one).

The Breakfast is served in a large dinning room (in period decor of course). The fare was good, but not great and also somewhat standard. I think though my wife and I were irrevocably spoiled by a B&B in Tacoma we stayed in many times where the hostess was nothing less than a 5 star chef who never ceased to surprise and delight us by creating something we'd never had before and invariably it was delicious - sadly the owners retired and sold it so I don't know what it's like now.

There is no off street parking available but all the streets in the neighborhood have curb parking. Unfortunately, many times (especially if you're returning late) it's hard to find an open spot. If you're a suburbanite you may want to practice your parallel parking skills before your trip as it will be put to good use on these narrow streets.

All in all, a wonderful place.

Room Tip: All rooms are different. Different sizes, bathroom facilities, and price. read web site to be sure...

My husband and I took our first trip to Portland in October to visit our son who lives there. We were lucky enough to choose the Lion and the Rose Victorian B&B for our lodgings. Dusty and Steve and staff were gracious and informative regarding the area. The Inn is a historical home and the owners have kept to this theme and it is charming and interesting. They provide a great deal of information in the form of local maps and brochures as well as literature. We declined breakfast as it didn't fit in to our schedule but the kitchen is open and coffee, tea, drinks and snacks were always available. Dusty and Steve and staff were always willing to chat and share information with us when we needed it. Our room was lovely and comfortable and clean. We stayed in the Joseph room. We found the Inn and our room to be beautifully maintained. We will definitely return and look forward to it. I hated to come home!

We stayed here for 2 nights, and although it was a little pricey, the hotel was very clean and the beds were very comfy. You can even buy the sheets you sleep on and they are very nice. Didn't have breakfast here, so can't comment on that. Bit awkward to park here as it's on a residential street, so you just have to park where you can. Very quiet though.

My wife and I stayed 2 nites in mid Sept. We found Lion to be excellent in every way.

We had initially chosen Lion primarily for its location and its rather unique 'a la carte' pricing in which breakfast and even housekeeping can be optional and price adjusted accordingly. We omitted both yet were availed of morning coffee and replenished towels if necessary (therefore I can't comment on breakfasts there, but would be shocked if they weren't of the same high quality as other aspects of Lion). Location --as others have noted -- was convenient (10 min. walk max.) to Portland's excellent light rail , which will get you virtually anywhere you might want to go downtown and beyond.

The house seemed very well maintained and furnished fully faithful to Victorian decor. The adjacent Irvington residential neighborhood is delightful and good casual dining restaurants nearby. Our room had a wonderful 'Sleep Number' bed , w/ separately adjustable firmness for both of us.

The best bonus, however, was the helpfulness of the hosts. Most of our interaction was with Dusty. Having been established for quite some time he and his partners have developed a remarkably comprehensive set of printed sheets - for your taking -- that address virtually every logistical issue or place of interest in Portland of concern to a visitor. The city's Visitor Center might well be envious of the comprehensiveness of the material available at Lion. Add to that that Dusty will embellish upon the printed info. for as long as you care to listen.

All in all, we'd place Lion and the Rose in the top 5 % of all the B&B's that we've stayed in across America and in other countries, and I'm sure that's close to if not over 100.

Room Tip: Try to get the Lavonna room with its alcove in the corner turret.
