I spent two nights here on a short business trip. There is a lot to like about this hotel, but one needs to know a bit more than the website shows. This hotel (unlike some of McMenamins other properties) does have ensuite bathrooms. Mine only had a shower, but the bathroom was spotlessly clean. The parking is free, but may be a block or so from your room. The staff were all excellent and efficient. I left my laptop at home, and there is no business center, but the staff volunteered to use their computers to help me with several issues, especially travel directions and road conditions during a winter storm. As a previous review noted, there are no bellhops to assist with luggage. Because of the weather, I had to bring a heavy item in from my car to my room, which was a considerable distance. Two staff members freely assisted me and refused a tip for their service. The outdoor soaking pool was a heavenly respite from the cold snow, and it was clean and easily accessible. Bring your swim suit or suitable attire, even in winter. There are no televisions in the rooms or on site, except one in a smoking bar usually tuned to sports. I usually would not mind this, but it would have been helpful on this visit to be able to watch TV because of breaking weather news and national events of interest. The restaurant serves good breakfasts, with huge stuffed omlettes. I had the veggie omlette one morning and it was one of the best I have ever had. It was great to have a slice of pizza and a beer that was freshly brewed on site while watching a recent movie in the theater. There are easy chairs, couches and comfortable chairs available. The entire hotel is an art gallery, and you can add art or a poem to the chalkboards in your room. The ceilings were at least 20 ft, maybe 25, since this was an old 1916 elementary school. The only downsides were smoking in the best bars (I've become used to no smoking anywhere in my home state) and the low lighting levels throughout the hotel. There is nowhere to read a newspaper or a book except your room. Even at breakfast you can't read a newspaper since the lights are at very low power. The location is a little out of the way and is not on the light rail or trolley lines. Since those were the worst things I could say about this hotel, you know that it is a decent place to stay for a reasonable price.
