“Totally Unique”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2013

Loved our stay at the Kennedy School and it made us want to visit other McMenamins properties. Our room was part of a former classroom and we were impressed with how it had been transformed into a bedroom, but retained many of the original features, including chalk boards and the old “cloak room,” where we hung our clothes. The soaking pool was delightful, the restaurant excellent, and the staff were helpful and friendly.

Room Tip: We stayed in the “Sewing Room” -- very spacious.

This is a school remodeled as hotel and restaurant. It even has a small old time theater.
We were at a birthday party/memorial in one of the classrooms. The southwest buffet served
was great, please everyone.

Staff were courteous and prompt. The whole building is fun. Good for families.

Room Tip: Book way ahead, they are busy.

Super funky and fun. My husband says he smiles every time he walks down the hall. Lots to look,at and quite unique. A cross between Harry Potter and Winchester Mystery House with a little Alice and Wonderland thrown in. We stayed in the new East Wing so we could have our own bathroom. We would give it four stars if the room were larger. Quite snug quarters. Very busy place. The food is good. Nothing fabulous, especially considering this is Portland. However, they are open for dinner on Monday nights! We tried 4 places (all closed) and ended up back at the hotel. Soaking pool is nice.

We stayed at The Kennedy School from 9/22/13-9/26/13 in room 112 or Amo's. It was clean with a hair dryer, iron/board, shampoo, etc. Only 2 bath towels for 2 people which meant if you take a shower morn and night you will have wet towels. The bed was comfortable and the pillows were nice. No frills. $125/night
The reason we won't be staying there again is due to the very breezy, cold air coming out of the ceiling vent which we had NO control over. You have NO control of room temp in these rooms. It blew down onto the bed and the desk in the room day and night. VERY uncomfortable. We mentioned this to the receptionist and she said there was nothing they could do short of turning off the air circulation to the whole place. We thought that very odd. She offered a room in their New building but said the rooms there were much smaller. She didn't make it sound very appealing.
They did not vacuum our room the first day. I mentioned this also to the receptionist and it was done after that.

Room Tip: Perhaps staying in the new building would be better. You would have control over the air temp in yo...

Thank you for your comments and constructive feeback. We are working with our facilites coordinator to help resolve the issue you experienced during your stay. the rooms in our new English wing are different than the rooms in the original school house building, I think they may have been more to your liking. I iwll be addressing this with the front desk agent you spoke with. I apologize if they were not expressed in the best light. I will be sending you a private message if there is anything else you would like to discuss. We hope to see you again.

What a serendipity. The McMenamins Kennedy School was a delightful 3 night stay. Unique, clean, comfortable, friendly and affordable. We had a dinner and a breakfast in their restaurant and were pleased with the quality of the food and the service. We would recommend it and stay again. It would rate a 5 if a Saturday night wedding party hadn't been been so boisterous.

What a fun place! Was there for a 2 day meeting and spent 2 nights in an old classroom! No TV but a chalkboard! It is a little funky but it grows on you! Has an onsite movie theater and plenty of bars, some only seat about 10-15! Make this a place to stay with friends or your loved one. In a quiet neighborhood with not much around, about 15 min to downtown.

I have been going to the Kennedy School house since I was little. I have always loved the old charm and funky atmosphere. I finally got to bring my husband, and he loved it too! There is always something fun going on everytime we go.

The food has always been good and the beer is good too. This last trip we enjoyed eating the in courtyard next to the fireplace!

If you are traveling through Portland this is a must stop!
