Okay - first off - If you have a riverfront room the view is outstanding. That said, there are other properties on the water that provide more bang for the buck. The sunrise from any of the east facing rooms on a clear, crisp November morning humbles you.
Staff on a Sunday night was cordial but ready to go home. Bar closes early on Sunday (bummer as we wanted a night cap after a business function). Yelp reviewer says there is a piano in Lobby - there is no piano. Rooms are SMALL. Linens & bed are pretty good. Coffee-maker w/Seattles Best but no mini-bar or micro. Room service breakfast was really good and reasonably priced. Apple sausage - yum. 42" Plasma & iPod sound machine are nice touches and really needed to drown out AC heat pump that almost rattles the fifth floor windows. All in all it's an okay place but a leather wastebasket doesn't make a hotel boutique. Maybe we got spoiled at the Nines last month. Fifty gets three stars - mainly because of the view and pleasant enough staff.
Note: If you use a wheelchair your view choices are parking lot or off-ramp. We had 3 different rooms for two couples. The one accessible room overlooked the parking lot ($25 for self-serve) but the TV didn't work so they moved two of us to a non ADA room overlooking the Morrison Bridge off ramp. The 5th floor river-front room had a dynamite view of Waterfront Park, the river and Mt. Hood. It also had the smallest bathroom door I've ever encountered in a hotel. Twenty-one inches. Why is it so hard to find an accessible room with a river view in Portland? Come-on hoteliers - get with the program.
