If you are a light sleeper, you should look elsewhere for a good night's sleep, but this is what you will miss: a view of the river with stunning sunrises silhouetting Mt. Hood, a very comfortable bed in a cozy, well-decorated room with a huge wall-mounted flat screen TV, a very clean bath with granite counters, gilchrest & soames bath amenities and a rain shower head, free, reliable wi-fi in the rooms, free use of the Bally's fitness center a block away, excellent customer service at check-in and every chance encounter you have with staff, and a wonderful in-house restaurant that shows up in Portland's top 100 restaurants. What you will also miss is the constant sound of the ventilation blower unless you turn the thermo way up, the eternal sound of traffic going by below (even from the fifth floor) that is especially loud when the roads are wet (must be expected in Portland), every sound from the hallway that comes under your door, and every (private) sound from the room next door. The walls are thin.
This hotel just celebrated its first birthday (since its rebirth from its previous life as a Sheraton hotel) the week before I arrived, and the rooms show their contemporary spirit without being austere like so many insist on doing these days. One wall is a warm chocolate brown, the desk chair is of the ergonomic variety, the carpets are thick with a geometric pattern on them. I had a lovely king size bed with 2 comforters, lots of pillows and a blanket. If it had been quiet, I would have slept like a baby on the luxuriously comfortable mattress. But when the guests next door decided to start their party at 11 p.m., I could hear the content of their conversation and the ventilation blower that had kept me awake for the previous 3 nights was a godsend to drown them out. But it wasn't loud enough to drown out the amorous activities that followed at 3 a.m.
But, if you are lucky, you will have a wonderful stay in a perfect location for exploring downtown and everywhere Trimet will take you (for free!) which is just a block or 2 away (depending on which way you are headed). Through a very popular travel site, I got my 4th night free, making this an excellent value. If you are sound sleeper, you will be very happy here.
