“Beautiful boutique re-rendering of an old chain hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2011

Located in downtown Portland, the Hotel is beautiful, with comfortable and well appointed decor. The beds are insanely comfortable and the bathrooms are nearly perfect. Beware the closet door/bathroom door. It's very heavy and will startle you when it slams shut. Everyone there was utterly lovely and gracious.

It's perfectly located to walk around the city and we were thrilled with our dinner down at Veritable Quandary.

I booked my room on the hotel website about a month in advance. I selected an ADA compliant Junior Suite, which was priced in between the hotels "Deluxe" rooms and "Modera Suites". When I arrived, I was surprised to find that the "Junior Suite" was actually an ADA compliant regular room - and the bath was REALLY ADA compliant, in that there was no bathtub or shower stall at all - just a large open shower in the middle of the bathroom, making the bathroom a complete wet area. After some back and forth with the front desk (who were VERY nice and accommodating), we were moved to a "Deluxe Garden View" room. The front desk indicated they had no idea why the website listed the ADA compliant rooms as "Junior Suites" rather than "ADA compliant rooms." The front desk did send a bottle of wine to the room to apologize for the room mix up, which was a nice gesture.

Other than that, our experience was fine. Clearly, this property used to be a motel, but was renovated to be the boutique hotel it now is. The overall ambiance is great - very mid-Century modern chic. While the rooms are adequate, they are very small, and only a small section of the window opens up to allow in fresh air. My overall experience was ok. While I would be ok staying here again, I would probably opt for someplace else next time.

Room Tip: The city view rooms are more private.

Centrally located near the free light rail system that goes across Portland. A very modern hotel that was most suitable for us, as tourists. We were able to leave the car unused for most of our stay without the worries usually associated with having a vehicle in a larger city. Free Wi-Fi was available.

This was our first trip to Portland and we absolutely loved this hotel. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, which made a great first impression! The decor in the lobby was very stylish looking and chic. Loved the outdoor patio with the firepits. Everything, including our room, looked brand new. The location was perfect and near all our shopping needs! We were only staying one night, but hope to come back and stay longer next time!

We stayed here for a few days while our house was being remodeled, and because it is in downtown Portland, near work, and not outrageously expensive. I highly recommend it. It is near all the great down town Portland attractions, and has a super happy hour. In fact, we have returned for the happy hour even when not staying at the hotel. It includes several "bar menu" items and interesting cocktails. Their small pizzas vary daily, and servers know what they are doing. The rooms are small (it is an old "motel"), but very tastefully decorated, with details that make the most of the small space.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the courtyard, not the street

I chose the Hotel Modera for a business trip based on Tripadvisor ratings. There are a lot good things about the hotel. The location is very good and has excellent access to transit. The hotel and rooms were upgraded in a funky, modern fashion. The staff were friendly and efficient and the beds were very comfortable. However, there were some drawbacks that prevent a perfect rating. It's an older building, so the wall insulation is not great. I had a crying baby on one side and some chatty young adults up to all hours on the other. I could clearly hear both from my room, which meant they could have heard me if I had made any noise. I also didn't like the fact that it didn't have workout facilities on site. Granted, they are only a block or two away, but it adds time to your morning prep when business meetings start at 7:30 am. A solid choice, but not a 5 out of 5 in my opinion.

Dear Guests from Victoria,

Thanks for choosing Hotel Modera! I am pleased that you found our location convenient and our staff helpful. I would also like to thank you for mentioning our affiliation with 24 Hour Fitness which is just one block away and available to all of our guests. When redeveloping the hotel, we decided at that time that our guests would be better served at a full service fitness club versus the typical fitness facilities often found at hotels which are limited to say the very least. Although you did not rate us a “5 out of 5”, I do appreciate your honesty, and thank you for taking the time to leave this positive review.

We rarely stay in one place for a week so we were a little apprehensive in spite of the good reviews. The hotel staff was terrific. The rooms very nice and beds comfortable. The room was quiet though we had the fan on all night so sound was blocked. We had lunch at Nel Canto and the salads (which is all we had) were excellent. We will definitely be back when we visit again!
