This is a convention hotel built in the sixties from the looks of things. It's not a disaster by any means but the common areas particularly need upgrading. I was given a room on the second floor on the "wrong side " of the building. If you stay there insist on the fourth or fifth floors due to traffic noise. Also ask for a room on the west side for the great views of the river and downtown. I must say my room itself was very clean and everything was in working order except a broken down floor lamp. Bed was excellent and water pressure was good. Since this hotel obvious caters to convention and business travelers I was surprised by the lack of a decent work chair. The WiFi was very weak and slow. No HBO or Showtime either. Overall not bad for the price I paid, but if I'd been paying a non discounted rate I'd be more disappointed.

I was a little worried about the hotel after reading the reviews posted on Trip advisor, but I was pleasantly surprised. The hotel was dated, but the staff and location were great. It is very close to the Max (easy transit to downtown) and the staff was very helpful. We booked through hotwire and ended up with two double beds, wanting a larger bed we asked the staff if we could receive a king size bed. They checked the availibility and the king rooms were fully booked, so they put us in a premium king room. I would definitely stay there again, it was clean, cheap and friendly.

After reading a few of the recent reviews, I can definitely say that I was a bit worried after booking this hotel through Priceline. I have been to one or two pretty bad Red Lions in the past was hoping that this would not turn out like some of my past experiences.

I was quite surprised and relieved when I arrived. The lobby was clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. The room that I got was clean and did not have any noise issues (stayed in #540). No ghosting issues with the TV and it had a lot of channels. Very convenient location and free access to the MAX.

The only thing that I can complain about was that the washroom did not have any lotion, shampoo, conditioner etc. on the first night we stayed and only had soap. This was fixed on our 2nd night. And the tile floor in the washroom was a bit dirty and had a some hair on it but they did a better job vacuuming on the 2nd night.

Keep in mind there is a $10 charge each night for overnight parking. If I can ever get the same rate again, I would definitely come back without hesistation.

“Much better than previous reviews”

I booked this hotel for one night on Priceline and got a great rate. Based on previous reviews, I was expecting very little. My wife and I travel weekly and rate the Red Lion Convention Center as very decent!

I have little tolerance for the whiny reviewers of this hotel. It's extremely convenient, just minutes from downtown Portland on the Max. Our room had 2 new queen beds, new carpeting and a table with 2 chairs to enjoy. The rooms aren't huge but they were comfortable. The staff (in contradiction to reviews) was efficient and kind.

There's a Denny's and a burger joint just behind the hotel, plus they have a restaurant/bar on the 6th floor that has a dead-on view of downtown Portland and it stays open till 11pm.

I wouldn't be scheduling weddings or long stays for the familly vacation at this hotel, but it exceeds your needs as a business hotel or a quick PDX getaway.

So, I am watching a movie, and writing this review as I stay in this horrible hotel. Granted, I booked through hotwire, and you don't really know which type of hotel you are staying in--but this was a three star! The lobby was unimpressive enough, although not offensive. Then, we got up to the room, and were accosted visually by the bedspread--a lime-green background with orange colored foliage you would probably find in nursing homes that will eventually be shut down--additionally, the windows were closed, but I could hear the dull roar of traffic anyway. The air-conditioner/heater has restrictions on it based on the temperature outside--yes, it will not work if the temperature is between 55-70. You are allowed, however, an oscillating fan, and even a space heater, to change the temperature based on your heart's desire. Overall, I would not recommend staying here.
I hope I can scrub my eyeballs in the shower to get the image of these comforters out of my head.
