“Very Happy Guest Of Hotel Monaco - Portland, OR”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2009

April 17, 2009

Having booked our stay on hotwire.com, we were apprehensive about what we had booked and how we would be treated. Our apprehension could not have been more wrong. From the very "get go", we were treated like royalty and I was impressed with the friendliness and service attitude that the entire staff displayed for the duration of our 3 night stay!

We arrived at the hotel at 2 AM, due to flight delays, but the check-in staff was quick and most accommodating and very pleasant. We were offered a choice of a corner room or complimentary upgrade to a mini-suite. Our corner room on the 7th floor was comfortable, nicely decorated, very clean and awesome. In addition, the bathroom was roomy and very modern and up to date as well. What appear to be new bathroom fixtures and granite counter tops just made the place look and feel wonderful.

My wife and I have traveled quite a bit and have stayed in a lot of hotels and I would have to say that Hotel Monaco is one of the best, if not the best we have ever visited.

The complimentary morning coffee and the free afternoon happy hour, both in the "really cool" lobby area living room, were icing on the cake.

All of the front desk recommendations were "right on target" whether it was their suggestion to take the light rail to and from the airport, ($2 each one way), how to quickly find our rent car place or the best place to get a great breakfast at a real quaint local restaurant.

As mentioned above, we rented a car and even found that there is some very inexpensive overnight parking just about any direction from the hotel.

In addition, we discovered a great place, just 3 blocks away, to go and have a glass of wine or your favorite adult beverage and experience a splendid view of the city and river from the 30th floor of a local office building.

Lord willing, we would like to return to Portland and if we do, we want to stay at HOTEL MONACO!!

Thanks again to the staff and management for making our stay SPECTACULAR!!

Call me a A Very, Very Happy Guest!!!

We were booked to stay in another Portland Hotel for our Easter mini-break, however at the last minute decided to come a little earlier, so I jumped onto hotwire.com and booked...and was delighted when Hotel Monaco was disclosed at our hotel.

We arrived in Portland after a travelling from Vancouver, BC, with a three year old in tow. Check-in was very pleasant and efficient...the long drive was becoming a distant memory. Then I was offered a glass of wine (complimentary wine tasting)...and five hours with a toddler in a car was forgotten. The very polite and helpful man checking me in then asked if I would like a complimentary upgrade to a king suite to accommodate our toddler. By this stage, I was ready to leap the counter and kiss the man.

Our room was stunning. Our little man had his own sofa-bed and TV. We had our own King bed and TV. The bathroom was ENORMOUS.

Our stomachs soon reminded us we hadn't eaten for a few hours, so we began what we thought would be the laborious task of finding somewhere decent to eat. I've never been one to eat in hotel restaurants, in fact I avoid them at all costs. Then I remembered a work colleague had recommended Red Star and the Gods were still smiling upon us.....yup, Red Star was downstairs.

Red Star deserves a review all of it's own - great decor, excellent food, wide range of beverages and an understanding of children's eating habits. Straight up, she asked what the toddler would like and put that order through first. Again, I had to control the urge to leap over the table and kiss the woman.

I can't think of a bad thing to say about this place. Well, actually I can....the $31 parking fee is a bit much, but the valet parking attendants were just so damn nice it seemed worth it.....almost. And we only got to stay one night, we then spent the next three nights at another Portland hotel, wishing we were back at Hotel Monaco.

Between my husband and I, we have stayed in hundreds of hotels all over the world and we both agreed this would make the top ten, maybe even the top five.

We'll be back.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Monaco. The rooms are clean and decorated really cute, the colors are awesome. The staff was exceptional, especially the valet service. These young people were engaging, polite and always went the extra mile (no pun intended). We loved the social hour in the lobby and Art the hotel's mascot is a real charmer. This will be our home away from home when we visit our son.

Hotel Monaco is a gem in the middle of Portland. The amenities are fabulous: complimentary wine in the evenings, free New York Times and Aveda products in the bathroom. My room was spacious and quiet - the only issue was the bathtub had not been cleaned thoroughly. Staff was very attentive.

The hotel is centrally located with easy access to all of the major sites in the city. Our room was clean and comfortable and the hotel staff could not have been more accomodating. There is a nightly complimentary wine reception in the elegant and cozy sitting room. Unfortunately, the hotel restaurant did not open until 8 am on weekends for breakfast and the cost for average quality food was excessive. Be prepared for expensive room amenities ie. $6 for a bottle of water and candy bars as well as slippers, sleepwear etc for sale in the closets! Internet access in the hotel Business center is also expensive so bring your laptop for free WiFi. Otherwise, this was a great place to stay and I would do it again without hesitation.
