“An average spot”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2013

I stayed at the Marriott in Portland for 2 days for a business trip. First: location, location, location. This cannot be beat. I could walk everywhere. Helpful staff, accommodating, but lacking in the typical warmth I am used to with this brand. The rooms are just OK - kind of old, but the beds very comfortable and clean. I cant really say anything bad - just for the crazy rate, it really was not a 4 star hotel. Shower curtain in the shower - same old tired bath and body works products - and no shower gel! - I hate soap - its the little things that make me happy. Concierge lounge a little small - it was packed in there for breakfast - but it was a nice selection. Just odd that when I got up there - no attendant and no coffee. She strolled in 10 minutes later and said "oh, I have some in the back - Ill go get it". Was it shift change, break time? I don't know - it was just a little unusual and not at all typical for such a service oriented brand. Finally, valet parking is fast, friendly and a little on the pricey side. Rooms clean - gym small but some weights as well as cardio equipment. This is a great location, just nothing special.

Very average hotel, this is an old hotel that has been renovated and upgraded, but its still feels old, the location is pretty good, we walked everywhere we needed to be, close to the train station, close to the food trucks, but if I came back to Portland I would not stay here again. The breakfast was below average and the service was also very poor. On arrival I asked for more hangers and towels and it took 2 phone calls and over 2 hours for it to be brought to our room. The phone and air conditioner did not work in our room.

Room Tip: Try get a high floor, we were on the 10th floor and looked directly into a building

Once we got checked in early and turned in my car to the helpful valet the vacation began.
It was sweet that they let us check in at 11:00 am. Nicely appointed rooms, good size, great views and location. Friendly staff.

Room Tip: No pool or spa

Talk about being smack in the middle of it all, the Marriott Portland City Center gives real meaning to its name. Despite being in downtown, once you walk into this hotel, you feel at ease & relaxation sets in. The ambiance is comfortable & classic. A great spot for a trip to Portland for business or pleasure!

Check in:

Hotel was easy to find and front desk staff was professional and courteous. In fact, they upgraded my room which is always greatly appreciated.

Room:

Room was the current Marriott branded style, which included a flat screen, fridge, desk, and small chair. Everything was clean upon arrival and I found the bed to be exceptionally comfortable. One big peeve was this property still charges for Wi-Fi and $9.95 a day. It is 2013 and unless there is a speed upgrade involved, this should be FREE. I find it highly annoying that the general public can use the WI-FI for free in the lobby, but paying guests get dinged for this. Shame on you Marriott. I am a loyal guest and have been since 1998, but please sort this out. Window shades perfectly fitted and no sun blasting into the room early in the AM. Nothing worse than poorly fitted window shades. One last comment on the room. Loved there was a refrigerator, but why not stock it? Make make the suggestion of free WI-FI easier to fathom. You leave $3.00 FIJI water on the desk instead of at least stocking cold water in the fridge?

Bathroom:

Well appointed, clean, and great water pressure! Plenty of towels, lotion, shampoo, and conditioner.

Parking- I did not hire a car for this trip, but they do have valet service. I did find it expensive for Portland and a friend had to wait 35 minutes for their car. Someone should look into why it takes so long to retrieve a car. This was also not at rush hour time either.

Overall, great location, nice rooms, and you will get the standard Marriott treatment here. Would very much recommend this property for downtown Portland trips.

Room Tip: If you do not need a car, use the MAX from the airport. $2.50 each way and the MAX stop is two block...

This is a really great hotel for location as the previous reviewer said. The staff are friendly and they have completed most of their renovation.

The food in the concierge lounge is a little on the uninteresting side compared to a lot of properties.

Avis lets you leave your rental car in their lot overnight for free.

No problem recommending this hotel.

one night stay, we flew in and it was a easy MAX ride to the hotel, no more than 5 min walk anywhere. Hotel put us in a nice high floor upgraded corner room with great views of downtown. Walked to the theatre, mall is minutes away, many many options for restaurants. Breakfast in the hotel was comped for gold/ plat MR members. Would be a top choice for my next stay in Portland. No Car needed :)

Room Tip: Corner room, and high floor
