“Wonderful find”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013 via mobile

We GPSd to the wrong oxford suites, but the front desk in Gladstone checked for other accommodation in the city and then organized us a wonderful rate at their Jantzen Beach location. Their kindness after a long day of travel was very much appreciated. We (4 seniors) checked in and were delighted with the quality of the rooms. We took our free drink tickets down to the bar, had snacks and then ordered pizza - no more driving that night. The following two days we explored various gardens around Portland and then the Columbia gorge, returning each night to relax and plan dinner. The front desk organized a shuttle each night to drop us off and pick us up and two different great restaurants. Wonderful find.

You can't beat the price. Our room was very clean but starting to show a little wear and tear. Checking in was great as the reception was very friendly and gave us some helpful tips. It is not centrally located to the touristy things to do in Portland so you do need to have a car to get to places. The complimentary free drink and salad/soup in the evening is nice but very ordinary and generic. The free breakfast is a nice thought but be prepared to wait an hour in line with lots of children. Was not worth the wait. All being said, I would stay here again as it was clean and the price was right for traveling through on a road trip. I would not stay for a special occasion.

This chain is known as a family-friendly chain, and the Portland location is comfortable, a good deal, and close to the city. However, situated as it is on Hayden Island, there's no way to avoid the 5 Freeway bridge over the Columbia River, and this gets really congested on weekdays. We were neighbors with a very noisy family, and we called the front desk to please ask them to quiet down. 30 minutes later, same noise (bumping, thumping, loud voices), followed up by a 2nd call down to the desk. Family finally broke up their party and returned to their own rooms, but kept up the noise in the hall. I guess the walls are a little too thin. Breakfast buffet and pool can also get very noisy. Not one to point fingers (as we were traveling with 2 kids ourselves), but just beware that the hotel feels at times like a Carnival Fun Ship.

The Family Double King suite was an especially good choice for a family traveling with teenagers. The breakfast choices were good and the evening bistro soup/salad bar was also a good option for us. We appreciated the courteous and quick shuttle service to the MAX metro Yellow light rail train line at the Vanport stop. Thanks to Pam and the rest of the front desk staff for their information and recommendations.

We stayed at the hotel for 2 days and the room was nice and clean. Althought there's always a long lineup, the breakfast was awsome among other hotels that provide free breakfast! They have a few secured entrances so you don't need to walk far if your room is further away from the lobby. You can just park close to the entrance closest to your room. The hotel itself was on an island right next to Washington so it's a shorter drive for us from Seattle. However I feel it takes a bit longer for us to drive around the city of Portland. This issue is actually very minor with the good price and value of the hotel. I would recommend this hotel if you don't want to stay in the town center and would like to have a relaxed stay. We got the vouchers for light dinner but we didn't have a chance to try because we always got back at about 11pm. So I have no comments of the light dinner.

Our 7 year old grandson lives with us so when we travel we look for suites to stay in. Oxford was a good choice for us because the cost is reasonable and an ample breakfast with many choices were included. The beds were comfortable. And the front desk was always helpful.

My wife & I stayed here for 3 nights while we visited the Portland area.

PROS: Going to downtown is quick and easy on the light rail as the Suites provides a shuttle to the lite rail 2 miles away

The rooms are nice and have everything you need.

Burger King is across the street along with a Safeway.

The breakfast is OK.

Vandi & Shelby are the stars of the front office staff. I hope they check you in and give you information.

CONS:
If you go anywhere by car, and try to return to the hotel from 4-7 pm you are caught in the Portland rush hour. We did 2 day trips to the to the Columbia River Gorge and Mt Hood. Coming back to the Suites was horrible both days and you have to take I-5 to get back here. 90 minutes in bumper-to-bumper rush hour is a horrible way to spend a vacation.

It seems that the front desk staff are not properly trained. Everything single person had different information on local attractions and places to eat. One staff person gave us a list of local places to eat, when we asked for the list from a different person, they didn't know what we were talking about. When we asked for directions we were told go a block here and there......instead no local map for visitors.

I think my biggest pet peeve was their pet policy. Seems that Oxford Suites will allow pets to go into any room. I asked the head housekeeper, what is done after the pet leaves. I was told they vacuum the room and will shampoo it. Most hotels will limit the number of pet rooms available the same way they limit the number of AARP or AAA rates they allow, not make all 250 rooms available to pets.

The evening reception they mention on their website is nothing more than soup and salad with some crackers/chips. On all 3 nights the coffee served in the reception room was cold, I think the coffee is leftover from the morning breakfast.

Oxford Suites Management.....get a SOP book for the front staff so they all know the same information. Ensure that all handouts are up-to-date and make that the responsibility of the Front Desk Manager.

Overall......Oxford Suites can do better and the local rush hour traffic is not their fault.
