“Comfortable stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2013

This was our second time to stay at the Rugged Country Lodge. The room was neat and clean, and the bed and pillows were very comfortable. The bathroom was absolutely spotless! We were in a room which faced the street, and found that it was not as noisy as I had anticipated. I had set the heater at a temp so the fan would go on and off which helped mask any outside noises. The warm cookies, and mints in the room were a very nice touch, and were greatly appreciated.

The one thing that I wanted to note (for the benefit of management) is that when I opened the door, the first thing that I noticed is that the carpet looked very dirty and/or stained. This detracted from the overall appearance of the room. A good cleaning or replacement would make a huge difference here.

The rooms are clean but a bit dated. The main drag is right outside and the cars and trucks are very noisy. The motel was almost empty but the front office chose to put a guest directly over us which didn't help with the noise.... beds are comfortable but noise is a problem. Rate was fair.

Room Tip: Ask for a top floor. Very noisy if you have a room above occupied!!!!

Friendly. Clean. Comfortable. Take a minute to read the testimonials on their web site. They are accurate! Our travels take us through Pendleton several times a year. We make a point of stopping to stay here. Very comfortable beds and pillows. Genuine people.

This hotel was a pleasure for us to stay in. It is close to downtown. It is vintage but has been nicely remodeled with quality touches such as the furniture, the artwork, Pendleton wool accent pillows & throws and the linens. The staff was very helpful, recommended a place for dinner, gave us a great discount using the Perka app. and a coupon for breakfast. Would highly recommend this place if staying in Pendleton. Don't believe the picture, the room itself was very clean and appealing but the bed did not have the beautiful covering or the two pillows shown in a red color, it was one blanket between two sheets. The bed was comfortable. The gal at the desk thought that she had turned on the WALL heater a bit before we got there but she clearly did not know how to work it, the room was freezing, and with asthma I could not stop coughing. My husband got the unit to heat, it ran and ran even after it reached temperature it ran noisily on and off continually ALL night. We asked for another blanket, and was offered another room, ah but the room had to first heat up, by this time it was after 11:30 so as a light sleeper, all night long listened to the very noisy WALL heater. Of course we ran it on high to get the room warm only to wake up at 3:00 am sweating. I turned the heater down at that point but noisy, noisy it was.

At Rugged Country we are always trying to improve, so all of our reviews are very important to us. Each room type is decorated a little bit differently, with the unifying theme being Pendleton Woolen Mills bedding accessories on every bed. In addition, most of our rooms feature a thick cotton blanket sandwiched between two high thread count sheets over the fitted (known as a duvet). But as I said, rooms vary. The duvet is the trend in America as well as in Europe. It's a very clean, minimalist look that I personally love.

I wish I could put every room's picture on the site, but it is not possible. However, I believe the pictures displayed are appropriate to the overall quality/look of our vintage property. (And many others have said as much.)

I am appreciative that you noticed our unique cozy, clean room, but I am very sorry you had trouble using the heating WALL units. ( As a small property we felt the wall unit was the best use of space in our rooms.) As you mentioned, the rooms heat very quickly and when we know you are coming we make our guests feel at home by turning it on and letting a light on.

But alas, the units both heat and cool and sometimes our guests get confused by the dials and remote--even mistakenly using the TV remote to run the unit! However, we are always there to help and have had very few problems with room heat or air conditioning when the controls are used properly. In addition, the units are maintained on a regular basis to ensure the filters are clean and in working condition. There is a fan high/low adjustment as well as numbers where you can set your desired range. (However, you have to be sure it's on heat and not cool.) So, I realize it could be a little confusing, especially for weary travelers!

In the unusual event there is a problem heating/cooling a room (which you said there was not) we happily upgrade our guests to a suite. (From what you wrote, it sounds like that's exactly what our manager did.) We also provide an extra microfleece down blanket in the drawer and we have more blankets/pillows or almost anything you need at our front desk (though that is seldom required).

We make every effort to treat our guests like family and we care about the details. Your review is well taken and will help us to be even more vigilant in the future to be sure folks know how to use those heaters.

We just happened to drive by and thought that looks like a super cute place to stay. Made reservations 2 days later.Super affordable and customer service was great over the phone. Everything was very clean inside and out. The bed was very comfortable and even had a very nice Pendleton throw blanket to keep us comfy. I believe Shawn was the managers name and she was very warm and welcoming to us both. Train passing by at night was actually very soothing and was not loud at all. We will be staying here again :-)

Cozy and Clean could not be a better title for a review, as far as this owner is concerned! We strive to be all that in addition to adding the extra touches and luxuries. Thanks so much for noticing and we hope to see you again soon!
