“One of a kind on the coast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2011

I've stayed at the Sylvia Beach several times. Most recently I visited the hotel with friends to enjoy a dinner at their restaurant "The Tables of Content". Dinners are served family style and feature fresh vegetables and a choice of a seafood, meat or vegetarian entreé. Reservations are a must. It's fun to sit at a table with both first time and returning visitors to the Sylvia Beach. I will say that the have a variety of chefs and my most recent meal was probably the least impressive. Fish a bit dry, vegetables undercooked (to my taste), but the ambiance is great and I will go back. They've redone a few rooms to new authors, and they looked great. The location is wonderful with Nye Beach right out the door. This is a place for people who don't look for flaws, but appreciate the unique. Yes the building is old and creaky, but if you'd don't like that sort of atmosphere, head down the street to the Shilo Inn. Too bad for you.

My recent stay at the Sylvia Beach Hotel was a blissful minibreak. I stayed in the Alice Walker room, which is decorated with an African theme. I knew not to expect TVs or wi-fi, and the quiet, restful atmosphere was such a relief. It's situated right by the ocean in the Nye Beach district, near shopping, restaurants, and the performing arts center. The family-style breakfast experience was fun (and delicious), and the hotel cat was sweet. The only drawback is that the building and furnishings are a bit run-down, but I suppose that's the nature of an historical landmark. Overall, it was cozy and unique, and absolutely my favorite place to stay on the Oregon coast.

Room Tip: The Shakespeare and Harry Potter rooms have the most elaborate decorations. I like to stay in an oce...

This was a perfect place for our family. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. They offered all kinds of advise about the area, and things to do. Our rooms were clean, cozy and the author of each room was well represented by the decorations. My husband and I had the Dr. Seuss Room. That was such a great room, the colors were bright, and the fish in the toilet tank were REAL - what fun! With so much going on - books, jigsaw puzzles and games to read and play, I almost forgot to mention the delicious breakfast. This place was truly a charm!

Overall a good experience, including dinner at the hotel, but the room we had, Gloria Steinham, was very small.

This is a marvelous hotel to get away and relax. The staff are very friendly and although the rooms are small, they are very well decorated and very comfortable. The reading room on the 3rd floor is a haven for relaxation and mingling with other interesting guests. I enjoyed a puzzle in the games room with other guests. I loved not having a television in the room and the only thing that would've made it more complete would be wifi access. definitely recommend this hotel and will be back!

Well, this is a charming little place that is not your run-of-the-mill hotel. It's in a lovely old building overlooking the ocean, and each room is decorated to honor a significant author. If you're looking for a modern hotel with big rooms and a lot of amenities, this is not the hotel for you. The rooms are small, but they are comfortable, clean, and quite a bit of thought has been put into decorating them. The staff is very friendly and cheerful. The dinner offered at the hotel was quite a good value, and it was nice to be able to sit and chat with some fellow guests. This hotel was a welcome change from what you usually find on a road trip.

My husband and I just spent our fourth weekend in two years at the Sylvia Beach Hotel. We love it. The hotel is funky yet well kept; rooms are small but adequate for a weekend. Furnishings are unique and uplifting. The best part: the people who come to visit. Writers, artists, readers and those who love a quiet weekend congregate here.

The staff welcome those who want a quiet weekend without TV, radio, or computers. The dining room is fabulous -- full breakfasts with homebaked breads and pastries are included in the rate, and we thoroughly enjoy the community dinners.
