“Almost hidden treasure! Do find it, just outstanding food and people. Right on 101 Hwy.”
Although it doesn't look like much from the outside, don't be fooled by that. The interior is fairly casual, but the food is just top notch. The same meal with a flight of wine we had for a moderate price would have been at least $185.00 in Manhattan . . . and Cliff, the Chef, is Manhattan trained!
Every single dish we had from appetizer to dessert was excellent.
Part of the charm of the place, outside of having wonderful food (Italian influenced), is the friendliness and happy demeanor of Lori, the wine expert and food server, and equally that of the chef, himself. How often now will you ever find a chef who comes out to personally check on each thing you've had and to talk to you personally. The owner is also quite personable and friendly.
Of course, if the house gets full, it might be expected that he wouldn't be able to do so, but tonight he was preparing dishes for about 22 people while we were there early (6:00 p.m. seating) and managed to talk with us and others about four times.
I think we'd take a meal here over the Addison in North San Diego county where our last meal was about $375. Of course, we consider being served by three different tuxedo clad waiters to be a bit on the old-fashioned side and some may still crave that kind of atmosphere. If so, friendly Newport is not the place for you to dine out. :) An unreserved 5 stars.
