“Nice, but way over priced for dining.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2010

We stayed one night at the Allison in a Penthouse Deluxe King. The room was wonderful. The restaurant was not to our liking. Our meals were way overpriced. We ordered the rib eye which was wonderful. The vegetable that came with the meal was water cress and our starch was palenta. Salad was extra. One other thing that was kind of shocking was we ordered one Diet Coke from the bar as there are no vending machines in the hotel and it was $4.00!!! Our breakfast the next morning was just mediocre. $15.00 for two eggs, one piece of toast, a few hashbrowns and one little sausage sliced in half. We will probably go back some day, but have decided to go to Red Hills Provincial Restaurant for dinner and find a breakfast place in Newberg.

Our second weekend at the Allison and everything was, once again, perfect. Rooms are calm and elegant, ammenities show incredible attention to detail. The spa is one of the best around. I love the steam room, massage suites and details (like the bowl of washclothes in an ice bath outside the steam and sauna.) Jory (the restaurant) is exceptional, very local and no question the best seat in the house is the kitchen counter where the chefs will chat with you, tell you what they are doing and pass endless tastes up to you. Without a doubt, however, the crowning achievement of this hotel is the service. The staff are local and friendly and thoughtful but also professional and very well trained. Some places like this you feel like the staff are kids home on break, this place is different, more like staff trained at the Biltmore who want to work near their Mom's house. One of the front desk staff actually got in her car and drove to a pharmacy to get me a box of sinus meds. Who does that??? Better than napa, really. trust me. go.
Great music in the lounge at night as well.

Your review is too kind, and we truly enjoyed reading it. It also gives us a chance to be excited about what we do best... our service! It's a fact that the Austin's built a stunning hotel, and everything about it is perfect - But what brings our hotel to life is the service we provide and pride ourselves with. We work hard to make our staff aware and knowledgeable, but a hospitable & charming personality cannot be trained, that's just the good people in the Willamette Valley that work with us. =)

It is important that we extend ourselves in any way possible to make sure your trip is as relaxing and peaceful as possible, even if that means we make a trip to the pharmacy for you when you aren't feeling that way. It's our pleasure, and thank you for recognizing us as exemplary... but frankly, it's just how we do things - *right*! =)

Thank you so much for your review, your help, your supportive words! It means a lot to us, and we cannot wait to have you again. Happy New Year, we hope this finds you well, and cheers!

Sincerely,
Michael | Online Concierge

5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2010

We booked the last available room for Saturday night. It was a Deluxe King. What an awesome room: great layout, nice view, relaxing colors, spacious but no wasted space, big tub with a sliding wall next to it that overlooks the bed area and outside windows, good sized bathroom, firm and comfortable bed, solid feeling furniture, and lots of nice touches like filtered water and automatic curtains. It's also a green hotel, but there's nothing that feels missing. Definitely in my top 5 hotel rooms.

Originally I wasn't in love with the location, which is a few blocks off the main drag in Newberg, but I quickly warmed to it. Perhaps it could have been nestled in the hillside near a famous winery, but I found that the location made a good hub to visit destinations north and south of Newberg. Plus it's really quiet and pretty where it is. I actually hope that they don't build up the area around it, because it's sort of like an oasis as is.

Value-wise, I can't believe that my room cost as little as it did for the quality of the room and services. Yeah, it's expensive for the area, but relative to other hotels of the same caliber in the country, it's actually a steal. As you can probably tell, I loved this hotel.

Accessibility notes: although I didn't ask for an accessible room, they were able to get me one. There's no problem getting a wheelchair into the room and there's plenty of room to get around. Sturdy bars in the bathroom, nice shower chair, though the shower hand attachment base is a little high. Most things in the room are low except the TV cabinet, which might be a little high for some people. The hotel has nice elevators and the paths outside are reasonably wide.

We are so happy you get it! Not only that... we are so thankful for your review. It means a lot to us when a well seasoned, well traveled person can endorse our little inn! In fact, it speaks volumes about the value of your review... with your previous experiences, and being able to compare us to many other lovely properties, it really gives some weight to the impact of your review. Not only that - your review will exist as a beacon to other travelers looking for the right place or right fit for their vacation. Hopefully you have helped them know to look no further.

The fact is, we *are* a value. It's taking some time for people to understand we aren't just another hotel near Portland, nor another little B&B in the Valley, but rather, a world class property that can be compared to the finest hotels in the world. In that, we are an incredible value, and we appreciate that you recognize that. Coming to Willamette Valley, it will seem like a Napa from a century ago, with prices to match... the end of your weekend will easily have a lower bill than a weekend in Napa.

We cannot tell you how much we appreciate your words - the fact that you took the time to right a review, as well as offer such insights - it means more than we can express. Please don't hesitate to let us know when you return. We hope you have a wonderful New Year, and can't wait to see your return!

Thank you again.

Sincerely,
Michael | Online Concierge

We stayed at the Allison for a wedding and we were met with amazing rooms and the best service. Our first day there we did some sightseeing and the staff gave us excellent advice on what to see and we were very happy with all that we were able to visit. The food was excellent, we really enjoyed the unique drinks that were available at the bar, and the bar staff was truly fun and knowledgeable. The amenities were amazing and I enjoyed a nice visit to the spa and would highly recommend it, both the staff and the services were excellent. We went to the allison expecting a fun wedding weekend and we ended up with an amazing, relaxing experience we did not expect. We were both sad to leave and look forward to making a trip back in the future!

We really appreciate your review! It's fantastic when something like our hotel takes you by surprise... you were expecting an exhausting haze of wedding chaos, and it turned into a stress reducing, relaxing sojourn from your daily life! It's a pleasure to read about, and thank you for helping to lead other people who are reading these reviews towards the best vacation they have ever had! =)

What's more, we really appreciate the photos you took the time to add. Snapping real photos gives future guests a real idea of the property, and the "verite" aspect helps to compliment our beautiful shots we have had professionals snap. It's easy to be drawn into the professional shots and enjoy the glamor and beauty they capture, but seeing a real photo from a real camera or phone gives a legitimacy that can't mislead! It's very helpful, people reading really like to see and trust user photos, and it does a lot to spread the word of Willamette Valley luxury and relaxation... so we are indebted to you.

Thank you again, Happy New Year, and we hope this finds you well.

Sincerely,
Michael | Online Concierge

This place was amazing and especially for what I had planned. I proposed to my girlfriend at The Allison and it was great. The staff was more than helpful within food at Jory or roomservice or pictures in the vineyard. I can not say enough great things about this place and the staff and will be going back as soon as possible to enjoy another weekend. If you would like to be treated like royalty go stay at The Allison Inn and Spa.

First and foremost, of course... congratulations are in order. Cheers to young love, and your new life together! So cheers to you and yours, and thank you so much!

We especially loved that you felt like royalty. Some investors paid alot of money to build this property. The room we stayed in (a deluxe king suite) was very nice -- spacious, very large bathroom, comfortable bed, etc. The inn and spa bills itself as in Oregon's wine country but it's just off the main highway and is actually more like a suburban development. You won't be surrounded by vineyards, rolling hills, and bucolic scenes. The property contains some gardens and trails but these are all brand new as part of the development. One can't help but feel that it's all a bit false and pretentious. There are many other more scenic areas in this part of Oregon. We had dinner in the restaurant -- wouldn't recommend it, given far better choices in the area, including Tina's and Joel Palmer House.

Thank you so much for your review! It's always interesting to read people's advice and thoughts on how we are operating, and what we are. It's important... it keeps us humble & keeps us aware... but it's also fun to see the help and power of these reviews on our community.

It's true that locals will have many places throughout Oregon to enjoy and celebrate - it's a beautiful state with endless scenery, hidden gems, and longtime personal hideaways (I know I have many of my own). However, a lot of of our guests are from wine growing regions in Australia, Germany, France, or Italy, as well as New Yorkers or San Francisco foodies that tire of Napa and the traffic jams. It's truly the first time in Oregon's history there has been something on par with the fabulous wine we produce, and the worldwide interest in how we make our stunning Pinots. Our neighbor hotels are wonderful, but not always what people wanted when staying in wine country for a gastronomic and oenophile weekend. We are proud to be the first and only option in the state of Oregon that opens up Willamette Valley to the entire world, and gives a world class option that can showcase how special a region we are.

Yes... there are many wonderful places to go besides the Allison for people that live in Oregon. But for those who are not lucky enough to live in and celebrate the Willamette Valley, The Allison will be a phenomenal opportunity to explore the places many of us take for granted. Even if you don't wish to explore, we can bring the wine-makers to you, as you stare out at the vineyards on our property.

Thank you so much for your review... the time you took to share your thoughts means a lot to us, and we know it will have an impact on future guests.

Sincerely,
Michael | Online Concierge

My wife and I are fortunate to have traveled to many fine resorts, none better than the Allison. The Ritz Carlton in Batchelor's Gulch (Vail) maybe the closest in comparison. The setting is spectacular, smack in the middle of the Willamette wine country surrounded by it's own vineyard. The attractive and helpful staff, magnificent decor, spacious rooms, wonderful cuisine, warm and inviting ambience, superb health club and spa, what's not to like?!

We only wished we had stayed another night. Congrats to the Austin's for creating such a gem. We'll be back and will bring a host of friends.

We truly appreciate the Austins, and what they have done for the surrounding community. We hope to be a shining light for the entire Oregon wine & travel industry, helping to highlight these amazing grapes and winemakers.. and The Austins made it possible. Thank you for mentioning them. They truly made a beautiful hotel.

We also thank you for the kind words about the people in it, and what we do. We read all of these reviews, and love to celebrate a job well done. There is nothing more gratifying than seeing people we have reached and helped make happy, or helped to enjoy their lives a little more... and it's an energy that we hope our guests take with them when they go back home. Whether it's a recipe idea from a JORY dish, a technique for relaxing learnt at the spa, or maybe a design idea for your home.... we love to be involved with people's lives and improving them with the experiences they can have at our little inn!

So thank you again... we enjoyed your review very much, and cannot wait to see you again... for a little longer next time! =)

Be well!
