“Need a warm, well-cared for homebase in Portland?”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2010

My partner and I just had a trip to Portland to celebrate her birthday, see friends, and enjoy Portland cultural events together. We enjoyed our stay at the Portland South Residence Inn so much I just have to write and say so!

The facility is clean, well-cared for, quiet, and the staff is warm and friendly. It's within walking distance of a great Trader Joe's so you can cook and eat in your room but it's also quick to get on and off I5 and zip into the city. We were impressed with room layout, the working grill in the common area (we cooked a great steak in a flash), and the size and quality of our complimentary morning breakfast. And it's also totally PET FRIENDLY!

If you're looking for a great Portland homebase, you won't go wrong choosing this facility!

During a recent Labour Day long weekend trip, we stayed at the Residence Inn in Portland South/Lake Oswego. We’re generally value travelers that do the odd splurge; married, no kids; in our thirties. This Residence Inn was excellent value as it met our needs in terms of price, location, and useful complementary amenities. We didn’t encounter or identify any major issues. This was a win via Priceline but would not hesitate to book this hotel directly to ensure we stayed here or if we had more specific room requirements (eg larger occupancy).

Location
We felt the hotel hit the sweet spot in terms of balancing between paying for location and access to things. The hotel is located a bit south of Portland and just off of the I-5. Our GPS was handy to initially find the hotel as the right turn onto Bangy Road was easy to miss. It also came in handy directing us to the right route for our first destinations of the day as there are a handful of lanes/routes to take depending on where you were going. As mentioned in other reviews the hotel is close to the I-5 for easy access but far enough not to hear the traffic. The hotel has plenty of free onsite parking.

In the neighbourhood we saw a few restaurants (including an Olive Garden, Chevys, etc) and a commercial complex, all within walking distance. Didn't see a gas station nearby though.

Portland was about 15 minutes away to the north, Woodburn about 25 minutes to the south, and Washington Square Mall/Costco/Best Buy 5 minutes to the west. We thought the hotel was a great place to home base from.

Room
All the rooms at the Residence Inn are suites. The suites aren't aligned like in a tradition tower but configured in multiple sets of about a dozen attached units. We were assigned a ground floor studio unit. There were also upper units that were likely multi-level.

The concept of Residence Inn is around extended stays so the suites have a lot of space and all the amenities to support that. Our studio was starting to show a little bit of wear & tear but was great in terms of space. The kitchen had a fridge, stove, microwave, and dishwasher for appliances and all the required pots, pans, and utensils. We took advantage of the kitchen by buying food from the PSU farmer's market in Portland and bringing it back to cook. There was also a kind of a welcome basket with microwave popcorn, teas, coffee, etc.

The sitting area had a sofa, coffee table, fireplace, and tv. Lots of closet space (including an iron & ironing board in one of them). There was also a desk with free wired Internet connection as well as free wifi. In additional to the free access, you can apparently pay for a higher speed connection. However, I found the speed of the free access fine even with streaming video, though I did find the wifi spotty at times.

The washroom sink area was located outside of the small washroom with toilet and shower/tub. There were base amenities like shampoo, conditioner, soap, and a hair dryer.

Overall we found there to be enough lighting if needed. However, natural light was limited to a glass sliding door which for us, opened up to the parking lot.

The biggest issue we encountered was noise from above. The family staying above us likely had young children as we constantly heard running across the floor while we were trying to hit the sack. Our suite was carpeted but the noise made it seem like it was hardwood above us.

Service
We found service to be very good. Arriving just past midnight on a weeknight, we had to be buzzed into the Gatehouse building where the check-in desk was. The clerk was friendly and helpful. The only other interaction we had with the front desk was at checkout and that clerk was just as friendly.

Maid service was fine. They apparently also load and run your dishwasher.

Miscellaneous
The Residence Inn also has a small but decent fitness room (treadmills, bikes, free weights, etc) upstairs in the Gatehouse building and a free business centre that had one pc & a printer. By the frontdesk was a bit of a sundry/pantry nook where you could purchase miscellaneous items and food.

We found their free self serve daily buffet breakfast excellent particularly compared to free breakfasts offered by other hotels. During our stay we saw: scrambled eggs; sausage rotated with bacon; pancakes rotated with french toast; hash brown potatoes; toaster with a variety breads/toast, english muffins, and bagels; donuts; waffle machine; fruits; cereals, oatmeal, and rice; yogurt; warm drinks such as teas, hot chocolate, etc; and drink machine with a variety of juices. The breakfast room (which was just an open space beyond the check-in counter) had a tv and decent amount of seating (about 30-35) but it seemed to get pretty busy during the last 30mins of breakfast. One minor complaint is the relatively early end of breakfast which didn't allow for sleeping in really late and ends up having everyone pile in near the finish. Alternatively, many people brought their loaded breakfast plates back to their rooms.

Other things we saw but didn't use included: a couple of nice propane bbq’s/grills, swimming pool with hot tub, tennis/basketball court, and self serve coin laundry.

We really enjoyed our stay here. I highly recommend staying here if you are visiting, have a car, and don't need to be in downtown Portland. It's great value because of all the free amenities that are included.

Really enjoyed this little hotel. All-suite. Booked through hotels.com for $109, which is a steal for how much square footage you get. Not that we needed it, but each room has a fridge, dishwasher, pull-out bed, kitchenette, etc. My mother also stayed at the hotel with her dog for the unheard of rate of an extra $10. What??! I am very used to paying $50-75/dog at comparable hotels. They accommodate you very nicely with a pet, with ground-floor rooms and ample lawns to roam.

The breakfast, while standard for a free meal, was probably a notch above the rest.

We really enjoyed

For a hotel of this ilk, the Residence Inn is a surprise. The whole place is showing its age, but the staff go out of their way to make this seem like home -- and for a long stay visitor it is home. The breakfasts are excellent and reminds one of a London B and B breakfast. The "happy hour" often makes dinner unnecessary. Could use a good overhaul, but on balance, it was a-ok.

We were traveling with friends and when we arrived we were told that the two penthouse/loft rooms we reserved were not available because the people who were staying in the rooms reserved for us were not checking out. That meant that our children would have to share a sofa bed instead of each getting their own bed. Not great but I have to say that Ezzy at the front desk handled the situation very well.

This location is really great if you want to explore Portland but not stay downtown. It's about 10-15 minutes away from the heart of downtown Portland. The rooms are adequate, well stocked w/the usual RI amenities. The HVAC is rather poorly designed b/c the vents are right over the beds and the thermostat is not in a central location. The WiFi doesn't really work but there is a wire by the desk. This facility has full sized stoves w/an oven which is opens up a lot of possibilities if you want a homecooked meal. The kids had a great time at the pool, I used the fitness center and laundry machines. There's also a grassy field, a tennis court, and a basketball hoop available for recreation.

Breakfast was adequate. There's a sunshiney lady who brings out the breakfast with a smile and a great deal of hospitality. I didn't catch her name but you'll know who she is if you stay a few days. The manager's reception is on Mon-Wed. It's adequate but let me just say that there are plenty of great restaurants w/in walking distance as well as a Trader Joe's. We ended up walking to Chevy's and Olive Garden a couple of nights. On our last night we went to the Lake Oswego Grill to find that it would be an 1.5 hour wait to seat our party of 12 so we went accross the street to Stanford and had a great time.

Stayed June 9th to 11th, 4 guests 1 Bedroom Bi-level Loft room.

Pros: Spacious rooms, friendly & helpful staff and convenient location

Cons: Flooring in Loft area squeaks a lot, stairs up to Loft area is very steep and tight. This could make it difficult for elderly guests.

For families with teenage children or older, the rooms give all parties space and privacy. On the 1st level, there was a Murphy bed, full bathroom, kitchen and living room area. On the 2nd level, there was a King Size bed, full bathroom and a desk. All parties really enjoyed their stay and were always comfortable without feeling cramped.

The location of this Residence Inn is right off the I-5, but not too close that you can here the cars & truck go zooming by like the Phoenix Inn. A shopping complex is right next door and there are plenty of restaurants nearby such as Olive Garden, Chevy's and Applebee's.

Downtown Portland is just 15-20 minutes away up North on the I-5. When visiting the area again, we would definitely consider staying here again, as well as recommending it to friends.

Booked the room through another site and got a great deal. Free hot breakfast buffet, full kitchens, nice pool, very friendly staff. Right off I 5. Made to feel very welcome. Would stay here again. Only (minor) complaints would be a noisy fridge in the room and a not so comfy sofa bed but not a big deal.
