We like to treat ourselves to a quality meal on the way home from camping and road trip expeditions, and this time stopped at Hood River as our respite back into town. There happened to be a parking spot near Celilo Restaurant as well as an open table outside in the sun, so we knew that the meal was meant to be. I have wanted to try Celilo for some time, so I was delighted.
We happened to stumble in during happy hour, where the small plate appetizers are half price. We ordered the mussels, prawns, hummus plate and steak kebabs to start. Everything was seasoned and prepared to perfection with a variety of wonderful tastes, and presented in a fine manner. The mussels were cleverly prepared with fennel, garlic and red pepper flakes and were quite juicy and succulent! The hummus and delicious harissa were served with light lavash crackers which were a nice alternative to heavy pita. And no skimping on portions here, even during happy hour.
We also very much enjoyed the prawns, which were prepared with a wonderful pureed "salsa"...so much that we ordered another plate of those as well as the mussels. The wine list is quite good and the pours generous. If you prefer a non-alcohol alternative, try the Pinot Noir sparkling beverage. Yummy and very refreshing, bubbly and delicious.
Our server was also working behind the bar, which I heard is typical for happy hour. She was attentive but not invasive, was quite pleasant and professional in a casual manner. I appreciated her style and welcoming manner.
The restaurant is quite pleasant inside and I am certain that a traditional meal would be fantastic, and well served. People seemed to be enjoying their beautifully presented food, and everything looked amazing from my vantage point outside. The full menu appears to have something for everyone, including pasta, paella and a variety of meat dishes. I cannot wait to visit Celilo again! I think we may go there for our anniversary next weekend, we enjoyed it THAT much.
I rate this restaurant as excellent. If visiting Hood River, give it a go. You will not be disappointed.
