“Great Bed and Breakfast in Hood River”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2009

I am pleased we stayed at the Inn at the Gorge. We stayed in the Terrace room, it was larger than I expected and quite comfortable. The inn is walking distance to downtown, I enjoyed the walk. The breakfast was great. We had fresh fruit, apple cake, onion and cheese fritatta and the best turkey sausage I have ever had.

New owners, great location, very well refurbished, excellent food and an amazing staff. They can't do enough for you. The views are beautiful and there is a lot to see and do.
The rooms are small as in all most old inns but the beds are new and confortable and the bathrooms are up to today's standards.
We will definitely return when we get to that area of the world again.

Pros: Breakfast was delicious, the house and grounds were lovely and well-kept, decor was interesting.
Cons: Older or handicapped travelers might have trouble with the antique showers (slippery, small, and high up). The walk from town to the B&B is a very steep hill. Rooms could be a little more spacious for the price.

This is a fabulous Victorian house with a wide, wrap around porch and delightful garden. The owners, Frank & Michele are extremely personable and welcoming. Our rooms (Master & Terrace) were huge – the Master bedroom has the biggest bed I have ever slept in. Comfortable beds, large closets and big bathrooms (Master has a shower; Terrace has a Jacuzzi tub).

We were surprised by the noise from the road as we hadn’t realized that it was effectively a main thoroughfare. Superfast wi-fi internet was a big plus point.

We enjoyed eating out on the porch with the other guests. The breakfast was very filling – you won’t need lunch – although a little strange for our British tastes…coffee cake isn’t a normal item in our repertoire. But hey, that’s what travelling is all about!

We ate at both the places Michele recommended – Brian’s Pourhouse (excellent choice of food and local beers, serves until very late which was good as we arrived late in town) and the 3 Rivers Grill (more upmarket, delicious food & wine, terrace overlooking the river). Yes, it’s a steep walk back but my partner’s 81 year old mother managed it just fine.

Michele also recommended Salon Visio as I badly needed a haircut – another good choice; thanks!

Have nothing negative to say except for the surprise we received at our comically small bathroom (had to sit askew on the toilet!) in the Rose Suite. The inn keepers were friendly but not obnoxious, the food fantastic and the location convenient. It is on an arterial road but the noise was never bothersome to us. Plenty of parking and a great large covered porch. While you can walk to town, about six blocks, it's all downhill, meaning it's all uphill for the way back. Our room was clean, quiet, and restful. The price is reasonable for Hood River, high for some less-prestigious areas.

Stayed in the garden room. The bad news was that the sofa bed is really not that comfortable if you need to use that as a separate bed which we did. The bathroom was also very poky. There is a kitchenette with a kettle which we loved (being Brits with teabags and our pint of milk in hand). The tv is teeny so don't plan on nights in with the dvds. The breakfasts were really good and we enjoyed meeting others around the breakfast table and swapping stories. The inn is a steep walk from town - we walked back but it helped that we had had a couple of drinks by then.

We reserved the room that advertised two double beds because thats all they had left. The owner mentioned that a cancellation might enable us to move to a room with a larger bed but that never happened. When we arrived we found out that one double bed is actually a hideaway bed in a loveseat with soiled upholstery. I wouln't even sit on the loveseat during our stay and felt that the accomodations were misrepresented especially since the proprietor was initially informed of our concerns. The owner was unavailable most times and didn't care about our problem. Breakfast was a crowded affair. Also the location is at a traffic hub and has rush hour traffic going by as well as helicopters circling at 9am during the breakfast thats served outdoors. Very uncomfortable.
