“Disgusting”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2012

Booked this room based on positive reviews, and dog-friendly status. We were arriving late and pulling a 22 foot trailer behind our pick up truck. I checked when booking that there was room for the vehicle and was assured that there was plenty of room "around back". The back of the hotel is very poorly lit, there was nowhere to park, and nowhere to turn a trailer around. After backing into a rock and damaging the trailer, we found a place to park next door as there was nowhere to park at the hotel. Room #19 was supposed to have a queen and a single bed (I had requested a king, but they did not have one). It instead had VERY very old double and single bed. The room smelled VERY strongly of cat urine. It was extremely cold and damp, and the heater, though producing lots of noise, produced no heat at all. When I called the front desk minutes after arriving, they conveniently did not answer the phone. We slept in our clothes due to the cold and reluctance to get next to the dingy sheets. The bathroom was nasty, with paint peeling from the tiles which had actually been painted over in lieu of some sort of remodel. The shower ran hot and cold to an extreme degree. We were just happy to survive the night. In the morning we discovered the Columbia Gorge Hotel next door, which was lovely, and also permitted dogs. If only we had known. This place was a disaster from start to finish.

Room Tip: Go to a different hotel.

Thank you for your feedback; we are all saddened to read it. We have staff onsite 24/7, always available to address any dissatisfaction a guest may have. We checked for any dingy-ness or stains using UV light to find the source of the smell you mentioned, and found no evidence of cat urine or other odor-causing stain. We use the same light on our linens to ensure they are clean. We often have people with trailers or boats park on our property, and have additional open lot space available if a person is uncomfortable turning a trailer. The beds in that room are indeed 1 twin and 1 queen, not a double. We checked the heater/ac unit and verified it does produce heat depending on what temperature it is set at, to preference. We are not sure why your call to the office did not ring through to us, and are looking into any possible cause. If ever a guest has questions or is dissatisfied with any aspect of their stay, we implore guests to please let us know while here so we can address the issue on the spot to satisfaction or better. It's our responsibility to provide our guests with a comfortable/great place to stay, and we apologize that we didn't live up to your expectation.

stayed here for 2 nights on a 2 week loop of western Oregon, GREAT VALUE, very nice, helpful staff, very clean rooms, FANTASTIC views. nice bath rooms and grounds; convient to Hood River a great town, Mt Hood and the gourge. Stay here and take advantage of the hotel next door, its much more expensive and except for its historical accolades is not a deal.

Room Tip: get a room with a balcony overlooking thr Columbia, WOW worth twice the price!

Thanks for your review! We're doing a bit of landscaping in the back as well to create a couple viewpoints, so there will be even more great spots to enjoy the view in the future! Thanks again.

Thanks, glad your family enjoyed staying with us! Hood River has a lot to offer guests in winter, making it a great little spot for a family getaway, and we are going to keep making our hotel better with each visit. Thanks again!

My wife & I stayed for one night during a recent trip. Our room was very spacious, tidy and comfortable. The receptionist was friendly and helpful with suggestions for dining options and activities. From our ground floor room we could see the river and gorge. The hotel is about a 5-10 minute drive from the center of town. (Not a drawback.) There had been some construction taking place behind our particular building, perhaps expanding the parking area. For the money, I was very pleased with the room. The hotel is not fancy, somewhat older; but clean, spacious and affordable. I'd stay here again without hesitation.

Thanks for your review! We are doing a little bit of landscaping behind the building you were in and along the cliff, to create a couple viewpoints and more open areas with picnic tables. We should have that side done shortly, and we hope you like it when we get done. Thanks again!

In the pouring rain, after a long day of driving with the dog, I stopped at a Best Western in Hood River, and was quoted $100/night (the AARP discount included and it was off season) + $25 for the dog. Luckily, the men in blue were checking on a situation when I got out to walk the dog, so I asked for a hotel suggestion.. The cop said all his friends stay at the Vagabond whenever they visit the area.
A couple miles from the flashing lights of the big box district was this sweet hotel. The woman, Kathy, at the front desk was so pleasant and accommodating. She apparently had a hard day with lots of disgruntled tourist because of the rain. Well, I love the rainy season in the NW.so things were on the up and up for both of us.
The room was perfect for one person with a dog, reasonably priced but with all the amenities of a Best Western. I really like that they had real glasses (no plastic or Styrofoam), a quiet refrigerator, ironing board, hair dryer, plenty of towels, extra blankets and pillows...all without asking. The morning after a rain amongst their majestic trees on the property, along the Hood River was a pleasant experience for a quick dog walk, with poop bags and a trash can conveniently placed along the short path.
The only reason, I did not give this 5 stars, is because they use very potent and toxic chemicals for cleaning,. It was all I could smell, even with the window wide open. The sheets, blankets, towels, bathroom, carpet, etc had the residual toxic chemical "fragrance" that makes most people sick. It was all I could smell, so did not really have a good night's sleep.
I mentioned it when I checked out and the front desk clerk said I wasn't the first person to complain. Baking Soda and White Vinegar, people! It is cheap, you can use it for everything and no toxic smells.

Room Tip: get a room in the back buildings, it is worth the extra few $$

Thanks for your review! We always provide all the basics one would expect (towels, extra pillows, etc) for a comfortable stay, and yes Kathy is great and always willing to help all our guests. We err on the side of making sure everything is clean every time for each guest, and I'll look into making sure we're not overdoing it in our effort to clean (by using too much cleaner) and your baking soda/white vinegar suggestion. We'll keep on upgrading things so next time we'll hopefully earn your 5 stars! Thanks again.

I stayed on a Tues. night in early Oct. 2012. I had called ahead and asked about views of the river and was given a room on the third floor (only one flight up from the parking area) of the building closest to the river with a very nice view of the Columbia. The room was large, clean, quiet, and quite comfortable. It had a little balcony with a table and two chairs. There was free wi-fi, an adequate TV, and a microwave and fridge. If you want a room with a nice view you won't find anywhere else in Hood River that compares in price. If you don't care about the view, they have less expensive rooms nearer the road or on the first floor. This is not a luxury lodge place. It's a older motel and the outside could use some sprucing up but the room, as I said, was newer, clean, and comfortable. I would definitely stay here again.

Thanks much for your review! We're currently sprucing up the grounds and will have a couple nice viewpoints and more open spaces once we get the landscaping done. We also planted a bunch of bulbs and have wildflower seed to toss in that will come up next year. We hope your like it once it grows in next spring! Thanks again.

This is an older motel that has been added on to, but well above average condition for its age. The original part of the motel sits out front right off of the old highway with the newer rooms back toward the river. We had a room just above the river and enjoyed the view from our room. Also had a deck you could sit on but it was a bit too cold for that this trip. The room was larger than the average motel and was very clean. Does not include breakfast but the price was reasonable for this area. Would stay here again when passing through.
