“Wish we could have stayed longer.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2011

We could not believe our good fortune when we saw our huge room & our beautiful view. We had so many things planned but it was so temping to just stay in the room! The bed was very comfortable and the balcony was so private. We also loved the huge shower head. It was an all around great stay & we would highly recommend the Vagabond Lodge.

Thanks for your review! Hopefully next time the eagles will fly by while you're out on the balcony, they usually nest in the trees just off the cliff. Glad you enjoyed your stay and thanks again.

I had a "view room" with a single queen bed. First the good things:

The checkin was quick and painless, and they bent over backwards to make sure that I had a good stay (I was able to call in and get an extra night after someone cancelled). I arrived on a day where there were eight kittens in the lobby, and that was an added bonus. The view is very picturesque, looking out over the Columbia River towards Washington. The property is on a 200 foot bluff, and it's a very pretty area. The rooms were clean, there were no extra hidden charges, and everything worked well. I liked the showerhead as well. There is a little parklike area. Oh, and the Internet was free and worked perfectly - I was even able to upload videos to youtube.

Now for the I'm not sure: At the bottom of the bluff are train tracks that are not visible. About ten times a day you could hear a train roaring by just a few hundred feet away from the room. I happen to like trains, so I was disappointed I couldn't see it, but I could see how others would be annoyed. Nothing that can be done about it, obviously, so I'm not classing it as "bad" - but caveat emptor. Same for the trains roaring by across the river - they're surprisingly loud.

Now for the bad: There were lots of little things that were just.. off. The chairs smelled kind of like used motor oil, the bed was very uncomfortable, the bathroom had no place to set anything, even glasses. There were no true washcloths in my room, just what looked like a small hand towel and that I had to get from the sink area. There's no light in the shower and there's no bathtub. A few more pillows would have been nice, but that's a little thing.

The location also stinks for amenities. There are a couple of nearby restaurants, but if you want anything else, you have to drive several miles to near downtown. There's very little within walking distance. If you're going to a place like that, it may even be what you want, but again, caveat emptor.

All in all I liked it, it was a good stay, but you're getting what you pay for, and don't expect something with amenities or special. It's an average lodge with an above average view.

Oh, and a tip: Even if you stay here, if you walk to the hotel next door, there's a waterfall that you can see, even if you're not registered there, the Wah Gwin Gwin falls. Very relaxing. It's not hard to find, but it's also fairly well hidden.

Glad you enjoyed most of your stay with us, we'll check out and fix the things you didn't like as much. Kathy's kittens found great homes; she does have more from time to time. You're right, there's not much we can do about the trains; but I'll look into helping reduce that noise. We'll check to see if the motor oil smell is new; we will be getting some new furniture for the building you were in as well. You're right, a shelf next to the shower is a great idea (we'll do that). The reason we don't fill the room with a lot of amenities (body wash, conditioner, hand lotion, etc) is because we have to toss them in the trash every time a new guest checks in, regardless of if they've been used, for health and safety reasons. It can be a lot of waste. We do have these amenities available at the office. Our washcloths are a little larger than most, and we have pillows on order so there's 2 different sizes in each room. Thanks for your feedback very much!

We enjoyed our stay at the Vagabond except that the internet was pretty much not working. Since our work requires us to stay in contact all of the time, this was a major problem. The only place on the entire property that got internet was a picnic table by the river and that was spotty. We picked the Vagabond for price and becuase they provided internet. If we had know that internet was not available, we would have stayed somewhere else.

They did not offer a discount from the usual room fee either for the lack of internet.

Room was nice, staff was nice, bed was nice. View of the river and across the Columbia was nice too. Staff recommened a couple of places to eat and they were all good. We picked the 3 River Grill and liked it alot.

Room Tip: AAA and check internet service before booking

Thanks for your review, apologies for the inability to connect to the internet. This is a strange and inconsistant problem, because we've had many guests who don't have any problem, but many who have the same problem as yours. This problem is also not based on room or area, as one day there are no problems but there may be the next. It's very odd. We're going to replace our hardware because it's obviously not working as it should. Unlike other hotels, we offer the wifi as a free service. If you could please call our office so we can more personally address this problem. Thanks again for your review.

Have stayed here several times and enjoyed the quiet setting. Beautiful vistas of the Columbia River from Lodge grounds. Friendly staff with fresh coffee every morning. Reasonable pricing in this pricey tourist area.

Room Tip: Some smoking rooms available.

The room was spacious; reception was fast and friendly. This is an older "motor hotel" style property, so it's convenient being able to park in front of the room and unload bags without a long walk or stairs. But here's a tip: I booked a non-view room a couple of weeks in advance and the only option was a smoking room. I'm not a smoker, but I figured if it was clean with clean linens it could work. Well, it was clean (except for the carpet, my feet started to get dirty walking around after a shower) but it did smell strongly of stale cigarettes despite a clean ashtray and no other obvious sources of the smell. I suppose it gets into the paint, bedspreads, upholstery, etc. It was tolerable, but another time, confronted with the same choice, I'd pay the extra for a non-smoking view room.

Room Tip: Don't take a smoking room unless you're a smoker

Thanks for your review, we'll check out the carpet in those rooms; it is almost time for replacement. The building you were in was the first building built, completed in 1954. We agree it's nice to not have to walk a mile between your room and your car. We do have 2 rooms that are still 'smoking' rooms, 40 rooms that are non-smoking. In the summer especially, it helps to reserve a room well in advance to get the kind of room most preferred. If all we have left is a smoking room, we do let our guests know that fact as early as possible. We do try to get as much of that smoke scent out of the rooms as possible, and we always replace all linens daily. Thanks again for your review!

I recently went on a trip with my husband and other family members to tour some of Oregon and northern California. The first day, after flying into Portland, we drove to Hood River to spend the night. We had reservations at the Vagabond Lodge and found it to be charming. The surroudings and the building we stayed in reminded me of summer camp in my childhood (that is if Cedar B Cabin at Tall Timbers had had private baths and a TV!) We stayed in one of the view rooms that had 2 queen beds and a balcony that looked out over the Columbia River. It was so pretty and so peaceful. We sat in the chairs on the deck balcony enjoying the cool air, the quiet and the view.

As others have said, this is not a luxury hotel, and doesn't pretend to be. But it is a very nice, clean, comfortable place to stay in Hood River. OH, and the fact that you don't get breakfast at this lodge is a big plus! And the reason is that you get to go to downtown Hood River for breakfast at Bette's Place. I think we all agreed that breakfast there was our favorite meal of the whole trip. (I'll review Bette's seperately, but go there and start by ordering the HUGE homemade cinammon roll.) Other places we ate were the 3 Rivers Grill, and the White Buffalo Wine Bar and Bistro. I recommend them as well.

So thanks, Vagaond Lodge, for a peaceful night's stay in Hood River.

Thanks for your review, I did laugh a bit when you explained why we don't have our own restaurant / breakfast (there's so many great places to go!). Glad you enjoyed Bette's, and your stay. You are right, we are not a lux hotel (there's a couple more lux hotels next door to us), but we'll keep on upgrading our rooms and making things as nice as we can while still reminding you of Cedar B cabin. Thanks again

This was our first trip to Hood River and after an internet search decided to stay at this hotel and was not disappointed. What a great place to stay. We had a "partial view" room and it was better than expected. We tend to choose hotels/motels with exterior doors and this one fit our need. The grounds are beautiful and the location was convenient. While this hotel is on the older side it is very well maintained and the room was very clean, the bed was comfortable and the linens were new and fresh. There is a fridge and micro in every room. The woman at the front desk was pleasant and informative. If you are traveling to Hood River we would highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Partial View Rooms and Full View Rooms (in three different buildings)

Thanks for your review! The building you were in is one of our older ones (we opened in 1954), but we do like to keep them fixed up and update them as we can. We do have newer buildings as well, the most recent one being completed in 2002; we remodeled one from the studs last year. Glad we could be helpful and you enjoyed your stay!
