Before I start my review I want to note that, at $119 per night, this hotel was a little bit more expensive then we normally spend. We (family of four with two teens) stayed here because it was the recommended hotel for a wedding. Also, I read all the previous reviews for this hotel and was not able to relate to their experience.

The Hood River Hotel is centrally located in the cute town of Hood River (wind surfing captial of the world). You can walk to the river parks, numerous galleries and restaurants. bookstores, coffee shops etc. While there is no private parking lot, on street parking was plentiful and convinient. There was no charge for the on-street parking since it was a holiday weekend.

This is a historic hotel (historic landmark) refurbished to original condition. The rooms are small, no refrigerator, no A/C. But there is an overhead fan and the windows open. Although is was the beginning of July and very hot (95 degrees), we were always comfortable in our room. the bathrooms are very adequate very clean and they provided fancy soaps, lotions and shampoos from their spa label.

The staff was unendingly friendly, giving out free bottled water to help with the heat. the restaurant was fine, although a little bit pricey ($10 voucher with room brings the restaurant prices to reasonable).

Our room faced the main street and we did not hear any noise from the pizza place or the train. My sister and brother both had rooms on the back of the building and they also did not experience any train or pizza place noise. I cannot imagine what the other reviewers were talking about.

In general we had a great experience. My preference is always to spend less on my hotel - but the price probably seems reasonable to most people. and the location was fantastic. We love being able to walk to everything.

This is a nicely renovated old hotel in "downtown" Hood River. The rooms have high celings with single pane windows. The $89. special is a terrific deal. It comes with a $10. breakfast voucher with gets about everything on the dining room menu. It sure beats those breakfast bars in the chains with nothing but sweets and a crowd shouting over the TV that can't be turned off. Parking is all "on street" and there are meters. But you can buy a parking pass for $3 half day or $5 full day. The rooms are clean and most have 4 poster beds with an old style bath. The river view rooms have both a view of the Columbia and the Uniion Pacific tracks. It's a trip back to yesteryear. A great deal run by nice people.

I stayed at the Hood River Hotel on Christmas weekend, so I realize that my experience is probably not going to be the same as somebody who goes during the summer high season. We showed up on Christmas Day and immediately got a free upgrade to a better room. The clerk said that the room was sometimes noisy, but seeing as Hood River was pretty empty we weren't worried about the noise. The "bigger" room was SMALL, so I can only imagine what the room I paid for would have looked like!
Again, if you are expecting five star ammenities, don't come here. The room had a gorgeous four poster bed, beautiful old hardwood floors, a vanity I wanted to steal and take back to my house- in a word, charming. The bathroom is tiny and your stuff will get wet if you leave it on the floor, but the bathroom is so tiny you'd better not be shy about changing in front of your roommate because that is the only place to do it. My only other complaint is that there was a big stain on the bedspread that was front and center every time the maid made the bed. I know she could see it, get another bedspread!
But the best part about the hotel was lounging around at night in the large, gorgeous lobby with the fire roaring behind us, chatting with the locals and other hotel guests, playing the provided boardgames, and sipping on wine and champagne. We actually went out to a few bars but wound up back at the hotel lobby because it was more fun!
The staff was also great to us, and even though it was Christmas Day and at work was the last place they probably wanted to be, they bent over backwards to accomodate us.

  • Liked — The lobby
  • Disliked — A few minor details were missing, like coasters to not stain the wood furniture, better towels would have been nice

I read some of the other negative reviews and we had our doubts. But my husband and I went into Hood River from Seattle and thought it was great.

The staff was is old school -if that is possible anymore, we hang out in the hotel lobby and the front desk staff kept coming over to the fireplace to throw firewood on the fire-like all night long! We got the riverview 'special' for $89. They have a dining lodging combo for $149 You have to ask about the internet special...they didn't talk about it when we called in was only after I said I was looking at the special internet. They gave it to me right away but they just didn't offer it before I said something.

I don't know why they had should crappy reviews, maybe they have changed staff since 2007. Day two - But we had fun in Hood River we ate at Celilo Restaurant next to the hotel for dinner, the service was a little slow but we enjoyed the food. We really like the little movie theater across the street from the hotel, it was a mini local theater.

We enjoyed Hood River and the hotel and will return again.

The staff at the Hood River Hotel is AWESOME. They are so accommodating and friendly. Everyone was great - Front Desk, Cafe and Housekeeping.

What a neat old place! And we loved hearing about Ola Bell, the resident ghost.

We also enjoyed the Jacuzzi and dry sauna.

Can't wait to get back to Hood River!

Forgot to mention - the GREAT food too.
