“Not what we expected”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2008

After returning home from a 5 week vacation touring WA & OR, this was the only hotel which disappointed us, and we do not feel that it is correctly represented on the hotel website. It is more like a holiday camp complex with outdoor corridors to the rooms and although there is an elevator to the upstairs floors, you still need to trundle you luggage a long way, first from car park to elevator then along complex corridors.
It was very busy when we were there and finding a space in the parking lot proved very difficult at times. With the restaurant and the swimming pool being in separate buildings the whole thing is a mish-mash and does not feel like a hotel at all.
The rooms are ok, reasonable size and clean. The views are good but we have seen much better from other cheaper hotels on this trip.
Check-in was not good either, we were served by a ditzy young girl who did not seem to know what she was doing.

The hotel is quite a long way out of town, which is what we normally like because you usually get peace and quiet, but not here it is noisy and unpleasant. The town of Florence was lovely and so if you want to visit there find somewhere else to stay.

We had a very nice stay at the Driftwood. The hotel is older and showing a little wear, but the room was spacious, clean and comfortable, and good value for the money.

There was a full kitchen including a full-size fridge, and ample counter space. The beds were soft and comfortable. Best of all was the view out on the large deck, and the beach right outside the motel.

We tried the restaurant for dinner and it wasn't great--overpriced and oily. If you don't feel like driving somewhere else to eat, it's okay, but you'd be better off doing what we did for breakfast and finding somewhere else.

All in all, though, a very comfortable stay, and we'd stay there again if we were traveling through the area.

If you are planning to stay anytime soon cancel your reservation. There is some seriously noisy utility work going on right in the parking lot, and it doesn't look like it's going to be over soon. My wife and I stayed on May 10, 2008. We booked on Driftwood Shores web page and it said nothing about construction. We were very surprised when we arrived and half of the south parking lot was filled with construction equipment. It was late in the day or I would have found another hotel. The construction finally ended at around 8pm, and the next morning we could hear them going at it before 7am (on a Sunday).

We had stayed at Driftwood Shores years ago when my kids were little and it was a nice little place. But that was 15 years ago and now it is very worn. I think we were sleeping on the same blankets from back then. The rooms are very basic, but seemed to be clean. No extra pillows or blankets are provided so you might want to bring your own. The walls are paper thin so bring ear plugs or you're not going to be able to sleep.

The pool area is just gross. The water in the hot tub was so brown it looked like people had used it as a bathtub. The restaurant is way overpriced for what you get, but the same can be said of a lot of restaurants in old town. If you want a really good meal at a good price I recommend that you go south on 101 about 5 miles out of town to a place called Morgans

The only real plus for this place is that it is the only hotel in the area that is actually on the beach. So if you want beachfront this is your place. If you don't want to stay at a glorified, noisy Motel 6 then stay away. My advise would be to call before you book and specifically ask about the construction.

Basic. Very basic. Having stayed in 4 different hotels in 4 nights during our whirlwind scenic driving tour of Oregon, this was our LEAST favorite. This place could learn a thing or two from the Shilo Suites (specifically the one in Bend).

Pluses: on the ocean; has full size kitchen; good selection of cable channels.

Minuses: the people checking in "off the street" in front of me got a rate that was $40 less than what we paid. When I inquired about that, the desk clerk said it was because they had an AARP card ($40 difference for an AARP card - I should have brought mine along!) Decor is dated; very old TV.

Just plain gross: the pool/jacuzzi The water in the jacuzzi was brown. And there were actually 4 people in it. Nasty. The pool room itself was so steamy that you could barely see anything -- haven for germs I might add.

Elevator access to upper floors, great ocean view, comfortable roomy kitchen w/countertop workspace for crafting or working. Small patio overlooking the ocean. Full sized refrigerator so plenty of space to store food. Restaurant offered excellent friendly service & ocean views but the food was pricey for the quality. Long sandy beaches to walk on, fly kites, etc. Nice pool for kids, toasty warm with good sized changing rooms.

  • Liked — The kitchen features and the POOL
  • Disliked — Perhaps the distance from town....but really, it's only about 5 miles from downtown.

I did some research before I booked this hotel, so I knew what to expect. It is an average hotel, but the most unpleasant aspect was that the room cleaner/disinfectant they used smelled like a nursing home! I had to open the slider to let the room air out! The furniture is a little out-dated, but the room is large and there was a full kitchen in ours, which we didn't need, but for people staying a while would be quite useful. There is an excellent view and it was rather nice to take a leisurely stroll up and down the beach. There is a restaurant attached to the hotel which is very nice and convenient. We had both dinner and breakfast there and had good food. The service was a little slow for dinner. We only stayed one night, but the bed was comfortable and clean. Not the most glamorous hotel, but it is RIGHT on the beach. I would recommend this hotel, but don't expect luxury. (and hopefully they will change their cleaner/disinfectant :-)

Having stayed in another motel in Florence last spring which sounded good but turned out to be a dump right on busy Highway 101, I was looking for something better for a return visit (to the nearby Indian casino).

Earlier Trip Advisor reviews of Driftwood Shores made me uneasy but it is the ONLY accommodation right on the beach so we gave it a try. We were pleasantly surprised, as the desk clerk could not have been nicer or more helpful, our room was exactly as we requested (4th floor) and convenient to the elevator. All is clean and the deck is quite roomy. The view of the beach and ocean couldn't not be better. Yes, the furniture is a bit dated, but comfy and everything works. Room has small refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker.

Apparently Driftwood Shores is a timeshare, but rents out rooms when available. It's a BIG resort but in late September, it was quiet except for noisy seagulls and the roar of the surf--but isn't that why you would come to the Oregon Coast?

Not five-star, but better than anything else we've found in Florence, if you want to see the ocean, rather than Highway 101, or the Siuslaw River.

I'd definitely stay here again. (We paid $94.00, AARP rate) on a weekend night.)
