“Horseback riding on the beach at must at C&M stables”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2013

C&M stables on the oregon coast in Florence takes you on a great trail ride through the forest to the sand dunes and onto the beach. Their horses were very well broke for the first time rider. We took both our boys and our 13 yr old was really worried and ended up having a blast and even trotting on the beach. These folks have it together and are very safety oriented. The guides take great care to keep everyone safe and having fun. They are very reasonably priced too. I would recommend to everyone to ride on the beach at least once in your life.

“Slip Shod, poor quality riding experience”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

My husband and I have ridden other places with well trained staff, well trained horses and great tack. C&M has none of that. The tack is worn and miss matched. On our ride 3 horses could not be allowed near other horses or they would kick. My husbands horse was a constant struggle, very head strong and hard to control. They let anyone ride with zero screening and very little instruction. We won't be back. The staff was friendly, but the guides are temporary and change every year. Riding on the beach in high winds isn't that fun.

“Don't get me wrong. The ride is great!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2013 via mobile

So why only two points? Well, there is two sides to it. We did the two-hour beach ride and the scenery is beautiful and it is a lot of fun riding the horses through the dunes. Even we as beginners had a great time.

But, the other side is the staff at the stables and, in our case, also the guides. Come on guys, get friendly! When you get there, you have to do the paperwork. After that, you are told to wait until your name is called. This takes about an hour. Nobody stops by for a friendly word or an update on how much longer you have to wait.

And the guides. Well, they give you all kinds of instructions, but not a single smile. They do not even talk to you unless you need to do something. Neither were we asked, if everything is alright or if we have any problems, nor did they make any kind of conversation. They are just doing their job-and it does not seem like they enjoy doing it (She was so bored that she started texting on her phone).. After the ride I was thinking about saying "Sorry for having bothered you" instead of "Good bye". That was the way they made you feel.. Obviously, no tip for that!

I suppose it is a lack of competition as they are the only outfitter in the area. But yet, it is too bad that they do not make that great ride into a great overall experience!

“Recently bought by out of state corporation”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2013

We had always come here and enjoyed it. we met the new owner, president of an out of state corporation, who knows nothing about horses. He said they plan to build a high end house on 35 of their acres and lease it to add to the profits of the company. The staff is friendly and helpful. The horse guides turn over every year so some years you get a good one and some years you don't. Since the new ownership I'm not sure we will go back. There are bathrooms but they are not very clean.

“Just like a dream!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013 via mobile

Jason was our guide. He seemed genuinely interested in making sure everyone in our group was safe and having a good time. He was good to the horses, although they can be stubborn eating grass etc which is not unlike horses to do. He handled them well as well as the inexperienced riders that rode that day with us. We took a very relaxing ride through the trees to the ocean. Once we got over the dunes it became very windy so make sure you bring a windbreaker and warm clothes! The views were literally like something out of a dream!!! Once you get to the beach you are free to continue south by yourself and not in single file like you are instructed to do on the way over. My horse Hercules was very healthy and happy. Jason stopped to take photos for us and really made us feel blessed to be there... Being from Florida there is just nothing like it! All In all, we had a fabulous long ride, peaceful and picturesque and it is well worth the drive from Portland. There are other stables available but these guys do it right! Thank you for the experience :)
