“Great, fun place to visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013

While spending time in SE Oregon (Steens Mountain area), we visited the unique Diamond Hotel in the ghost town of Diamond about 45 miles southeast of Burns. The Malheur Wildlife Refuge is at their doorstep and bird watching is very popular in this area. The Diamon Hotel was built in 1898 and has about 8 rooms or so. Some rooms upstairs share a bathroom. Two rooms that were built on in the 1950's have their own baths and are quite large (suites 1 & 2). The hotel serves an adequate breakfast and grill lunches. The dinners were excellent and served family style. The food is home spun, as in barbequed ribs one night and great stew the following evening. They have an adequate wine selection as well. The staff is very attentive and there is "all you can eat " servings.
Our room was quite large and very comfortable. There is no television or phones in the room. During the night we heard the coyotes outside in the distance, but otherwise it was very quite. During the summer, the sky gives off quite a show of the stars.
If you enjoy history and old, but well kept and run hotels, give this place a try and don't miss the beautiful Steens Mountain loop during the summer. The historic French Glen hotel is just a half hour or so away.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms 1 or 2 as they have private baths and are larger than the other rooms.

I have been coming to the Hotel Diamond for years. It has always been a pleasant stay. The location is remote, but the folks who run this small hotel are friendly. Owing to the remote location, they serve a dinner if you want it. You want it - they could serve anything and it would literally be the best dining option in 30 miles. Yet, they serve the best home-cooked meal you can imagine.

A special note on my recent visit. It was 97 F in Diamond (70 F on the The Steens Mountain - the purpose for my visit). They had AC! Who knew!

Room Tip: Room # 1 upstairs is inexpensive and is a corner room ... with AC if needed.

Stayed at the Diamond Hotel so we could tour both the Diamond Loop with the Round Barn and the Steens Mountain Loop to get to the East Rim.
Awesome room with queen bed and a sitting area. We choose a room with a private bathroom. Air conditioning available with a screed in porch for our evening relaxation.
Dinner was amazing! Family style dinner with braised beef and roasted beets and potatoes. Beer and wine available upon request.
Quiet, relaxing and cool after a hot day of touring

Room Tip: two rooms with private baths down stairs, three rooms up that share to baths.

My wife and I stayed here in September, 2012 and were delighted with the accommodations and the people. It may be old, but has been renovated completely and is sparkly clean. The food is wonderful, and no one could possibly go hungry. Easily accesible at the end of the paved road, it is definitely remote, which to us is a wonderful advantage. There are two houses in the town of 5 people, and I think we met all of their inhabitants in our 2 day stay. The loop road to the north takes you to the Round Barn, a stop of fascinating historical interest. Southeastern Oregon is for the adventurous to some degree, as planning for fuel and feed is a must, as stations are far apart. If you are looking for luxury, swimming pools, hot tubs, tv, and all the rest of the popular creature comforts, this is not for you.

We booked a three bedroom ranch house on a working ranch in Diamond Valley only a few miles from Hotel Diamond. Best experience ever; our family got to watch cattle being moved, feed horses apples, be entertained by peacocks, turkeys and chickens! Coyotes howling at night, even laid under the stars and full moon one night! Once in a lifetime experience for some of family! Will do it again!

Room Tip: N/A stayed at ranch house

This is a quaint, small hotel located more than 150 miles from any freeway in a lovely valley in SE Oregon. Very quiet, simple but clean rooms decorated in old ranch/farmhouse style. The delicious home-cooked meals offer a different selection each evening served family-style. Daily fresh-baked breads. Wonderful desserts. The perfect place to relax as there is no internet and very limited cell service.

Room Tip: Rooms upstairs share baths, other rooms have baths

Accomodations are slim in this part of the world but we found a gem in Hotel Diamond. Some say this hotel is Diamond and we're inclined to believe since the population is a total of 5. Straight out of the "old west" this hotel has so much charm,is really a "bed and breakfast" and for a few dollars more will serve you an "over the top" dinner including dessert which will leave you rubbing your belly in delight and satisfaction. This out of the way part of southeastern Oregon is really a trip-not a weekend getaway.Once you go, you'll be planning your next adventure back to that part of the world to get away from it all.
