Description: Our family business took shape when my great-grandfather, Joseph Czarnecki, opened Joe's Tavern in 1916 in Reading, Pennsylvania. His son, Joseph Jr., carried on the tradition, transforming the original tavern into Joe's Restaurant and changing the focus to fine dining and wine with wild mushrooms (a family passion) as the centerpiece. My father, Jack Czarnecki, followed in his father's footsteps, taking Joe's Restaurant to a new level while maintaining the mushroom theme. Despite the success of Joe's, our family's lifelong desire was to combine great mushroom hunting with fine wine. This dream was fully realized in 1996 when my parents, Jack & Heidi, purchased The Joel Palmer House and moved the family and the restaurant west. Our cooking revolves around wild mushrooms and truffles which we gather ourselves and with friends. We have always striven to obtain locally raised ingredients in our cooking, and we use many locally produced greens, herbs, and vegetables. Frequently we will use ingredients found in the cuisines of Mexico, China, Thailand, Poland, and India, so we call our cooking, “freestyle”. And, of course, we are working hard to create dishes which match the glorious wines of Oregon, especially Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay.

“October Wine trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2013

A group of eight of us dined at Joel Palmer. The food was very good. You should love mushrooms to come here and unfortunately everyone in the party must have the same menu if you want to select the all mushroom tasting. We had a few that didn't really want an entire selection of mushrooms.
Our meal was very good, the wine selection very good but our service was very slow.

“Very good!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2013

The food was wonderful. I don't like the idea of having to pick from a 3 course meal. I don't always want dessert. In this case, it was very good but I don't like being committed to a 3 course meal. Overall, the food was very good and the service was awesome. The best part was I could bring my own (favorite) wine and pay a corkage to enjoy it.

“Vastly overrated”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2013

Joel Palmer House is known for its mushroom dishes, but the dishes do not contain any identifiable mushrooms - merely pureed, chopped former mushrooms. The wine list had the highest markups of any other restaurant in the area. This restaurant is more of a relic of the 1970's and needs to update its menu and preparations.

“Explosion”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2013 via mobile

Our group of four had the pleasure to sit outside on a beautiful evening and experience the ultimate mushroom explosion. Oh my. We took the recommendations and ordered the ultimate tasting menu. The food just kept coming. The waitstaff was phenomenal and the mushroom based dishes were excellent. This is a dinning experience not just a fancy dinner with mushroom sauce. Be prepared, this is not a cheap date kinda place.
