The owners are Burgundians who make fine wines in France and who decided to expand by acquiring land in the US for pinot noir grapes. They considered California but decided that Oregon offered a better terroir and climate for their purposes. The tasting room and production facility is located on the crest of a very scenic hill and consists of a large, modern, gravity-fed winery with tasting areas on the upper level and a gorgeous outdoor terrace. With advance reservation and payment of a tasting fee, Domaine Drouhin offers a comparative tasting of the family's Oregon and French wines, which is interesting, probably more so to very experienced palates than mine. Nearby on the same road is Domaine Serene, another fine pinot noir maker, and Oregon's only olive press (though most of the olives come from elsewhere while the olive grove matures).
