“Pleasantly surprised, perfect lunch”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2013

We decided to stop for lunch at The Horse Radish during a day of wine tasting in the Willamette Valley. It was recommended to us by Jason at the Roco Winery tasting room in Newberg (visit them for a flight inspired tasting). The menu has everything from an olive plate to a sort of "pick your own" charcuterie plate with case of artisan cheeses to choose from, pizzas and sandwiches. We started off with an amazing salmon spread served with a baguette that left us almost licking the dish that it was served in. My husband enjoyed a roast beef sandwich on focaccia bread while I had the quiche made from artisanal cheeses served with a side salad of mixed greens, fresh goat cheese, dried cranberries and a mushroom vinaigrette. The quiche was so light, fluffy and airy but still rich in flavor. The moral of the review is, don't be fooled by it's casual nature because the food is fabulous and the service was excellent!

“Nice wine list, great soup”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013

The Horse Radish is a pleasant, informal restaurant with an excellent wine list (including the option of a tasting flight of 3 vs. a glass), and a very good selection of cheeses on their cheese plate. But what really impressed both my wife and me was the roasted pepper soup which was truly remarkable. Oh, and the proprietors were very friendly, too.

“Perfect lunch stop on a rainy day (or any day in Oregon!)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

I've been to Horse Radish several times, and it has been consistently good all-around -- food, atmosphere, and service. Carlton is one of the Willamette Valley's sweetest small communities -- in a one-block span you can get great anything -- wine, chocolates, jam, baked goods, lunch -- and service. What can you do to improve on a BLT? Serve it with perfect Carlton Farms bacon ( a famous, terrific meat purveyor just down the road -- frankfurters to die for!) on lightly toasted foccacia and let me substitute avocado for tomato. Yum! It was a chilly day, and their vegetable soup was delicious. We had my mother-in-law's 90th birthday lunch here several years ago -- when they just served tapas -- and they were wonderful to us. We often take visitors here in the summer when we can sit out back on their patio. Try it -- you'll love it!

This place is a gem. Well worth the drive. Meat and cheese plates are amazing, they have numerous gluten free items awesome homemade desserts and the live music was great. Carlton is so charming!

“Amazing!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2013

We stopped by here on our way through to McMinnville. We had the cheese and meat tasting plate with fig jam and bread. It was truly amazing. Friday afternoon with the baseball series on tv and no other people in the place at 2 in the afternoon. We were waited on hand and foot and can't wait to go back. We have sent several people here since our visit and everyone has told us what a great recommendation. You have to go!
