“Bit of a hike, but worth it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2013

This is a ten minute hike on a nicely paved trail if you're moving without small children/babies. However, it took us 20 minutes or more to get to the beach...haha. We had to stop at every large tree stump turned child's fort along the way and hide inside and explore. It was a glorious walk part way along a river. Be careful when approaches the beach with the children, because there is a steep drop off on one side. We let a toddler run ahead and it was a bit of a heart stopping moment before we reached him, but all was well. Also, a very heavy rainstorm rolled in near the end of our visit, so we weren't able to fully enjoy all this beach had to offer, but I will be back next time we're on the coast even just for the hike to the beach alone. What a spectacular site!!

“Hidden Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2013

I stumbled on this park by accident, and now it's one of my favorite places to go when I visit the Oregon coast. I most recently did the Cape Falcon trail up to the overlook, beautiful views along the way (and spectacular at the top), old growth forest, wildlife, streams, and the switchbacks/elevation aren't too difficult. I went up and back in about 2hrs rt but was taking my time. It was pretty muddy, so wear boots.

“Everything you want from the Oregon Coast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2013

Oregon's entire coast is dotted with beautiful state parks, but this is one of the best. If you have only a short time to spend in this spectacular region, go here! There are gigantic old growth trees, a rushing mountain stream, a variety of hiking trails and a beautiful beach with views of the majestic headlands that dominate the seascape. A little bit of everything that's wonderful about the coast. Some, but not all, trails are accessible.

There are no day use fees during the winter months.

“Downhill walk to the beach. Day use only. NO camping.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2013

There is NO longer any campground there! It was closed in 2009 and remains CLOSED.

We've visited this park a time or two, and it's set up differently than many other day-use State Parks.

First, you park in one of two huge parking lots alongside the highway. It seems as if there are hundreds of cars here. One of the lots is on the east side so you then must cross the highway, and during summer, this might be a bit tricky!

Once you are safely on the west side, there is a paved footpath that takes you down the hill to the beach. I would not call it "hiking" - the path is paved!

If you want to actually "hike" there are a number of trails in the area.

Although it's only about a half a mile down the hill to the beach, if you have mobility issues, know that you'll have to make your way back *up* the hill again. For most folks, including us, this is not a major problem.

However, other Oregon coast day-use parks have ocean views and beach access directly from the parking lot, which for some people may be more convenient.

You'll walk through the trees to get down below, which is interesting if you live in a city, but we're rural folks and honestly weren't really impressed. We found it to be pretty darn busy with people going up and down the hill.

Once at the beach, it's very nice, just like 95% of all the Oregon coast beaches :-)

Since this park is so close to Cannon Beach, it can be quite busy, especially in summer. Short Sands beach has been a popular surfing location for many years.
