“Locals love this place, you will probably not”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2013

This coffee shop used to be called the Salty Dog, but has changed hands and is now called the Bell and Whistle. While the decor is cuter inside now and the seating area is cozy and comfortable, the service is extremely poor and the food selection consists of day old (or older) store bought pastries. The locals love to hang out here and the locale on the port is very nice, but anyone looking for a decent cup of coffee with a scone or muffin will have better luck at the Dutch Brothers or Starbucks north of town.

An improvement in service is really what this place needs. The woman who waited on us the last two times we met local friends there is quite surly and cannot handle more than one coffee order at a time. There were eight people waiting and some walked out the door in disgust when it took 15 minutes to get a single latte because the woman will not start anyone else's coffee order (even people who come in together) until she completely finishes one drink. Very inefficient and a complete turn off.

“Looks like a place for the locals”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 25, 2013

When we were there for a mocha coffee and muffin, there were three others who were locals and enjoyed the homey atmosphere. The coffee was good and a fair price, but the muffin was dry and yet was not on the day old plate. They are right on the water which is good, but the pastry selection was limited. I would rate it a little lower than Starbucks, but higher on the homey factor.

“Local coffee hangout”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2013

Forget Starbucks. This is the place. It's small, but it's right at the harbor, has great coffee and pastries, and it's a place where locals go to meet and hang out. If the weather is nice, get your coffee and sip as you walk along the dock and read the interesting posters about the tsunami that hit just a year ago and devastated the harbor.

“Good coffee and a fun attitude”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2012

Salty Dog is a great little coffee shop on the Harbor in Brookings. They have yummy coffee concoctions and quality house coffee. We loved the interior. Lots of photos, local art, and a cozy place to sit. It does have free wi-fi, and you can cozy up on the couch or sit at one of their tables, which appeared to be handmade, and were quite unique. The barista who served us was friendly and had a fun attitude which spread throughout the shop. Now and then, a local would come in and they were on first name terms, which was neat to see. Often, the people make the place, and in this case, that was absolutely true. While the coffee was good and the atmosphere funky and creative, the barista was really the soul of the place. We went back several times!
