“Incredible food and drinks. Great atmosphere. Get there now!”
We were in Sunriver recently, four of us, for a golf weekend. The second night, we ventured into downtown Bend. Their monthly art walk was going on, so downtown was packed and busy and filled with music, people, food and drink. It was a late summer party.
We had reservations at Zydeco. The place was bustling, the energy felt good.
Two of us started with margaritas on the rocks with salt. Another had a Manhattan. The 4th was not drinking alcohol.
First things first. Cajun food is not in my top five. If I had been picking the restaurants for this trip, I would've skipped over this one. And, margaritas in non-Mexican restaurants are, at best, hit or miss.
Well, it's a good thing I didn't pick the restaurants on this trip. Zydeco turned out to be one of the best dining experiences I've had in the past couple of years. As good as anything in Portland and right up there with many of restaurants we've dined in NYC in recent years.
The margaritas were absolutely perfect. Beyond perfect. The Manhattan, so I was told, was as good a Manhattan as this guy had ever had. And he works in the hotel/restaurant business down in San Diego.
Ordered the artichoke corn fritters. Fantastic.
My main course was
shrimp & andouille sausage, peppers, thyme in a light cream sauce
This, too, was exceptional. Had just the right amount of spice to it. Not overwhelming. Plenty of shrimp. Almost too many! The sausage was tasty and cut thin. The light cream sauce was perfection.
Two others ordered Shrimp Etouffee
served over basmati rice with cornbread
Also wonderful. We all marveled at how good this place was. The service was top-notch as well.
For some reason, we skipped desert. That won't happen again.
I could eat here two nights in a row, no problem. And I don't say that about too many restaurants.
Wish we had returned the following night. Instead, we 'ate' at Ariana and had one of the worst dining experiences ever.
Anyway, next time you're in Bend, Oregon do not leave without eating at Zydeco. And Zydeco owners, think about opening a restaurant in Portland. Please...
