“Avoid the Black rock hike”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2014

The trail/road up the cinder cone and the view was fantastic, but the Black Rock hike wasn't worth it. No signs once you start down the trails so you have no idea how far you have gone or whether you have even reached the destination.

“Stark, Beautiful Views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2014

Lava Lands Visitor Center is a great place to take kids from about 4 or 5 and older. Be sure to get a pass to drive to the top-- it's really one of the best things about the place, especially on a clear day. The old Fire Lookout has pictograms of the mountain peaks for 360 degrees so you can identify that peak you've always wondered about. The crater has a pretty easy walking path all the way around. We then drove the 9 miles or so (on a dusty gravel road) to Lava Cast Forest, where our 6 year old was enchanted by the opportunity to climb into the lava rock castings of trees that burned away when the lava flowed against them. Some are really deep! Paved 1.5 mile path allows for disabled access. $5 at the visitor center gets you into both, or with a National Forest pass it's free.

“Just open for 2014”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2014

Nice friendly staff, good parking, washrooms. I found the exhibit to be pretty good but I'd expected more information about the area and the rock formations, vegetation etc. It was the first day of the season. $5 allows you in and to all the other Park features.

“beautiful in it's own way.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2014

Where do you get to walk on a lava field in lower 48? Here! A raven was a companion on our walk. Fun to stroll and admire the formations.
