Close to Bend, flat water. Great time with friends! I love this lake, fun coves, lava tubes, excellent views of the South Sisters and Broken Top mountains. Great Views of Mt. Bachelor too. Flat water, Fun Times with Friends!!

“Sparks Lake - An Incredible Kayaking Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

My husband and I retired, moved to Bend, Oregon, and decided to become flat water kayakers. We've enjoyed paddling on the local rivers and the Cascade Lakes and our favorite is Sparks Lake. Trying to describe the natural beauty is a challenge! The waters are clean and you can observe fish swimming under your kayak. When you look up, you see several of the Cascade mountains - It feels as though you could actually touch Broken Top! There are lots of nooks to explore. with places to dock your boat, climb ashore and eat your lunch. We have not yet done this, but we always notice folks who are camping in primitive sites that line the lake. There are also several hiking trails to enjoy, one that is short and easy enough for almost everyone and another that is easy, but a longer distance. It is no wonder the photographer Ray Atkeson considered this lake one of the most beautiful places he had ever visited. I promise you will not be disappointed if you visit Sparks Lake!

“Great short hike to do with kids”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2012

This hike was perfect for my almost 5 year old and her friend. There are places to stop and play in the water (or at least sit by it) and the rock formations are really neat. You also get a great view of the mountains.

“Greatest views in Central Oregon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

But, the views are not always great as the crowds are spoiling it with too much noise and too many boats. How can we keep this spot pristine is my question?

“Absolutely Gorgeous!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

This is one of the most beautiful mountain lakes I have seen, and I've seen many. It's also the closest one to Bend, so it is usually busy in the summer, but that's all relative. "Busy" for Sparks means parking might be a bit tight, especially near the kayak put-in spots, but once you're on the lake you've still got a lot of solitude. There are several nice camping spots along the roadway in as well. When you turn off the main highway, you have to drive to the "boat ramp" area to get a feel for the lake, the main campground at the highway isn't that close to the lake, and there's better spots as you go back in. The gravel road is good-- drove it in my 36' RV-- and it's worth the extra few minutes. A must-see if you're in Bend for only a few days!
