We loved the Lara House, a craftsman era home decorated in fine fashion and fitted out with nice linens and a great mattress---we slept like logs after our arduous hike to the top of the South Sister mountain. Lara House is located in a lovely residential area across from a park, a couple blocks from the center of Bend, Oregon, which is a nice place to take a stroll and where there are a good number of neat dining spots and boutiques. The breakfasts at Lara House were absolutely wonderful. Our fellow guests were adventurous "travelers" --all with interesting stories to tell. While called a "Bed and Breakfast", we would characterize Lara House more as a small inn since you feel more like you are staying in a luxurious small inn housed in a home rather than intruding into someone's home--something we viewed as a positive. The owners do not live on the premises but entrust their gem to several wonderful innkeepers. When we told them in the evening that we would be leaving before breakfast time ( which I think was 9:00AM) to begin a long hike, they left some food for us in a fridge. If you desire to do some hiking in the mountains in this part of Oregon but then return to a nice in within easy walking distance of a nice night out, this is the place for you. While the room rates were not low, they did correspond to the high quality experience. We were glad we chose Lara House.
