“A time gone by”

Gorman Motel

Dec 25, 2007

My wife and I stayed here some time back she fell in love with the beach. She so loved the ocean. We stayed two days. The motel was so so but she was happy. She is gone now and I have tried several times to go back to Bandon. Each time the emotional barrier has been too great. Now I read reviews saying the Gorman is garbage. I'll never return as those memories are now clouded and what was so special is lost but a bit of my heart still lingers.

From the outside the building looks kinda run-down. It could desperately use a new coat of paint and new carpet lining the halls. However once we got inside the rooms were clean and simply decorated. As a rule of thumb for me I always check the sheets and blankets to be sure they are clean and had been changed. They were clean and comfy. The bed wasnt too hard or too soft and we had fresh towels every day.

Our view was ok, however I think the room next to us may have had a better one. I would definetely reccomend staying on the top floor if you want a view. The only thing that really put us off was that you look to the south down the beach, not so much directly out into the ocean, and there is a parking lot that is frequented my many travelers as a viewpoint, so you dont have that "just you and the ocean and wildlife" that you get from some more expensive hotels.

The continental breakfast they speak about is hardly that. They only serve coffee and pre-packaged pastries. Nothing else. No fruit, cereal, bagels or anything else you usually see at a continental breakfast. So if you are looking for that sort of thing stop at the store or go to a diner.

All in all this is a great hotel if you just want to get away for the weekend and you dont have a lot of extra cash. The owner, Margaret Gorman is really nice, she gave us a great rate because we were on our honeymoon and didnt have a lot of extra cash after paying for the wedding. Basically if you dont need the frills of a fancy place than you will be just fine.

We needed a mini-vacation as we had not been away for a couple of years. We wanted to kick back and relax with an ocean view and take our little dog, we also smoke (but are fine with smoking outside). Doing an internet search I found the Gorman Motel. I read all the reviews before making the initial call. I was told the "corner" rooms were taken already, and the price range listed on their website is wrong, you pay the high one, never the low one. We decided to pass on it. We changed our minds the next day and I called back to reserve a room. This time the phone was answered by Mrs. Gorman. We were told we would have a pet friendly, smoking room, the next best room on the second floor. Talking with two different people, and now knowing......depending on what you want you will get different answers. I think they will say ANYTHING to get you there and get your money.

From reading the reviews we decided to go "prepared", after all, we were all about the view........we took cleaning stuff, sheets, pillows, towels and thought we were prepared for anything. At first we were fairly happy, the room was clean, although dated, the linens were in good shape, clean and the room was bright. We had asked at check in where to put the poo when we clean up after the dog, he said just throw it over the balcony.......I said I did not mean in the room that my dog would never "go" in the room.....then he said, oh, just leave it. Then he told us that the room was non-smoking but we could smoke on the balcony. (We were told on the phone twice, that it was smoking room. Ok, fine. There are no screens on the windows and definitely no frills in the rooms! We soon discovered that the toilet did not flush, so went and got someone. He could not get over it, had never happened before! I have to admit that they were trying to be very accommodating to us. We were moved into the "best room", the corner room. He kept saying "best" room like it was a Presidential Room or something!!! It also was clean, but very worn. The storm door going out on the shared balcony was rusted and had no glass or screens......I don't know why they wouldn't just take it off!! You still had to open it to go out. No screens on the one window that opened (we had brought a fly swatter as well). The vertical blinds on ALL windows would not close, so anyone outside can see you inside (this was in both rooms). Beds looked fairly new, but hard as rocks. The toilet worked, but slowly. Shower ok, but again drained very slowly.

We woke up the next morning freezing. The heat did not work, not at all. Once it got light outside we realized there was NO way to see out of all those windows because they were not clean on the outside! It IS the coast, you DO get dried up mist and salt on windows, and they DO need to be cleaned. So, we couldn't see the beautiful view anyway. We decided to go down for the Continental Breakfast, and to tell them about the heater not working. A jug of Orange Juice was sitting on the counter, as well as small, pre-wrapped Cinnamon Rolls. That was IT.

Later that day they brought up a space heater, I was a little worried about that because the plug wanted to flop out of the outlet, but we used it our second night. When we saw how far the pool was away, we didn't even go. The spa is in a tiny, tiny room and you have to run down someone to get a key....but the clorine smell was too much for the tiny room the spa was in, so we did not use that either.

Without the view, because of dirty windows, and achy backs, we decided to cut our losses and leave early on our second day. We had booked for 3 nights. We left, and eventually wound up in Lincoln City for our last night.

Mrs. Gorman is elderly and just lost her husband. I would not expect too much too change at this Motel. It is for sale and hopefully whoever buys it will build another motel instead of condos, but at a 7 million dollar price tag I would not hold MY breath!!

The Best Western is not too far away, but after having dinner there (which was pricey) I do not see how they have ocean front rooms, unless you see further out to sea....there is no way you could see the beautiful beach area that Bandon has except from the Gorman.

So, beware!! The Gorman is not the place to stay! We really, really tried to make it work for us, in the end we had to leave and it wasted and ruined the precious time we had.

“Blood Stains!”

Gorman Motel

Sep 12, 2007

We originally made our reservation with the Gorman Motel but as we arrived to check in, the motel said to drive to the sister motel Bandon Beach Motel, which is a block away. At first we were happy about this as the Gorman Motel looked run down and scary. We then found our reservation was for the Bandon Beach Motel instead. The place is a dump! Just walking down the hall to our room was scary enough, but our room was the worst! I always inspect the beds in a motel before staying and this was one time I was happy I did. The bedspread, fitted sheet, flat sheet and pillowcases all had BLOOD STAINS on them!!!!!! We have a little 4 month old baby and I was scared. We were there at a busy time of the week and no other hotels had rooms available. Luckily the Table Rock Motel managed to squeeze us in after I cried and begged on the phone. I was more than happy to leave that place. The carpet was also dirty and beyond stained. The ceiling was dirty and sagging. The only good thing was the view. You are right on the beach. Both motels are up for sale and I think the current owner has given up. She didn't even seem phased when we asked for our money back and showed her the stains. DON'T STAY HERE!
