“Disappointing B&B”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2012

We stayed here in early July 2012 and were quite disappointed. Upon arrival, our room key was left under the mat with a note as the inn keeper was out with out of town friends. The Sunset Room had an extremely hard, uncomfortable bed and the bathroom was lacking any luxury whatsoever. I had a sponge bath the next morning as the shower was so tiny and had terrible water pressure. Also the shower head itself was beneath my head and I'm only 5'3". The room was very average; not what I expected for the price. The house itself didn't have a real "clean" smell - I didn't feel it was adequately maintained. We left early the next day and didn't stay for breakfast. We enjoyed Old Town Bandon - found a great coffee shop and had a tasty breakfast. The day before, we found a few interesting shops in Bandon including a great chocolate shop and enjoyed walking on the beach. Other than the lack of comfort at this b&b, we enjoyed Bandon.

We were lucky enough to have the entire B&B to ourselves for the night, and stayed in the Gray Whale Room on the top floor (complete with a jacuzzi with river, ocean, and lighthouse views). Shirley, the proprietor, had an appointment during the afternoon and couldn't meet us when we arrived, but she left our keys with a note, along with dinner menus/suggestions and an offer to help ourselves to the wine in the fridge and some snacks out on the counter. We took her up on that and enjoyed a glass of wine sitting on the porch and watching the sunset before dinner at Lord Bennett's by the beach.

Breakfast in the morning was awesome. She had asked us the day before what we preferred, and we were welcomed down with a yogurt parfait and a huge plate of fruit before she brought over fresh blueberry pancakes, bacon, and eggs. Way too much food, but it was a great start to the day!

She also introduced us to the resident sea gull that frequently hangs out on her porch. Years ago Baby the seagull became a regular, and we met Miss Olivia, Baby's daughter. Miss Olivia was forward enough to peck on the window until Shirley gave her some bacon and leftover French toast. Hilarious!

Finally, Shirley offered to take our picture out in front of the great view before sending us on our way. She has the B &B on the market and hopes to sell soon so she can retire, but you should visit while you can!

Room Tip: The Gray Whale Room is expensive, but is the best room in the house! Top floor, great views, jacuzzi...

Lovely stay at the Lighthouse B&B... beautiful house with fantastic views of the lighthouse & river. And a quick drive or bike ride to the main beach which is amazingly beautiful. We stayed at 5 inns along the CA & OR coast this vacation and Shirley made the best breakfast of them all... her Minnesota farm girl roots, I'm guessing :)

Room Tip: The sunset room delivered as promised!

Everything about this B and B is terrific. The location is right on the ocean in the attractive town of Bandon, Oregon. Shirley is a wonderful hostess; she made suggestions for restaurants and activities in the area. Her breakfasts were several courses, all delicious. We spent a lovely afternoon just reading and relaxing on the deck watching the waves and seagulls.

What a wonderful B&B. Had a lively room overlooking lighthouse and marshlands. Nice morning walk along the beach. Yummy breakfast - French toast was amazing ... I got the recipe from Shirley.

Great location, but severely overpriced for the ambiance, the overall look of the property, and the food. Major issue: a two week cancellation policy, which leaves a traveler zero freedom to change plans mid-trip. The town appears economically depressed, like most along this lower stretch of the coast, offering virtually nothing but tacky waterfront shops, golf and beach combing (and the beaches aren't nearly as nice as the beaches around Florence up north). We would have cancelled our reservation had we been free to do so, but 2 weeks notice is outrageous. Despite all of this negativity, the inn keeper was a pleasant, accommodating person. The property, though clean and adequately appointed, lacked the typical guest-pampering luxury of a typical B&B. Look elsewhere if you want an elegant B&B, and skip Bandon in general if you're looking for excitement.

Room Tip: Ours was cramped and unremarkable.

Shirley runs an amazing B&B. Everything is five star from the rooms to the breakfasts. There is a peaceful feeling in the B&B, the views of the river and the sea are mesmerising. Shirley goes out of her way to make your visit memorable. The town is close by with good restaurants which Shirley is happy to give you information about and then book a table for you. The high speed internet which is available was the best we experienced on our trip. I would recommend the Lighthouse B&B to anyone. Margaret & Dave - England
