Guangzhou Dim Sum is located in the Econolodge Motel near 11th and Garnett (and I-44). VERY strange place on the surface to offer Cantonese delicacies, but do yourself a favor and get past that. :) The owners are VERY friendly and speak English well, although some other staff may struggle... even so, everyone is kind and helpful. The restaurant has received terrific reviews in local/state press, yet it remains one of the best-kept secrets in town. (How??)
Ordering dim sum is a visual experience -- during the week, Guangzhou offers a picture menu; on weekends, they roll out the steam carts. The carts are packed with delicious Hong Kong-style morsels of joy. If you don't know dim sum (or are scared to try it -- and there's no reason to be), they also offer a HUGE selection of Chinese dishes, fried whole fish, and hot pot and well as roast duck and pork (weekends).
Most dim sum dishes have shrimp and/or pork involved. Our favorites: sticky rice and meats inside a steamed lotus leaf, steamed shrimp dumplings (har gow), pork dumplings (shao mai), pork/leek fried dumplings, shark fin dumpling (mostly pork), turnip cakes, chinese broccoli w/oyster sauce (gai lan), eggplant with shrimp, and for dessert, coconut custards or fried sesame balls with sweet bean paste. Mmmm!
Having eaten dim sum in Chicago and on the West Coast, we can assure that the prices are indeed reasonable for the type of cuisine involved. The decor is more hole-in-the-wall than "fine dining", but is reminiscent of many Chinatowns past where judging the food by the restaurant decor was almost always counter-intuitive. In fact, the atmosphere reminds me of the BEST mom-n-pop places.... nothing much to look at, but the reason you go is for what's at the end of your chopsticks.
There is never a wait to be seated, and no rush to get you out the door. Everyone we have told about this place has LOVED it. We visit frequently and won't eat Chinese anywhere else in town. Oklahoma City has dim sum options as well, but Guangzhou is MUCH more reasonably priced.
Guangzhou is closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Large parties are easily accomodated, as are group take-out orders. Great place to take the family; the large circular tables have lazy susans on them for easy family dining.
