“Cozy Getaway for Out-of-Towners & Locals”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2012

A few words that describe the Cottonwood Inn:
- cozy
- charming
- spacious and airy
- relaxing
- inviting
- family-like

Gail and Duke have clearly worked hard to design an atmosphere that suits a wide range of preferences and abilities. The two-story home has bedrooms and common areas on both the upstairs and downstairs. The upstairs also offers a large open room where guests can have a quiet work-out, game night, or dinner party. No matter where you go, the B&B hosts several quaint treasures, including books, artwork & niceties (such as chocolates in the bedrooms). I've stayed at the B&B several times & have deeply enjoyed my time, no matter what room I'm in, though I must admit the Cottonwood bedroom is my absolute favorite! It is a treat to curl up in such cozy beds & wake up so refreshed every time I stay.

The food is filling and delicious. Anytime I've had breakfast at the B&B, I've felt right at home & somehow Gail manages to make every meal feel like a treat.

The B&B is set back in the quaint outskirts of town and tucked in among the trees. It's easy to find with the lighted sign by the end of the driveway. It also offers a wrap-around back porch area for guests to take some time to themselves with a book or friends. The lifted porch area provides an outdoor living-room style area for guests to enjoy drinks, conversations & the current season.

Most importantly, Gail & Duke are an incredible team who have found a way to create an atmosphere of intimacy, restfulness & cleanliness. Gail is a natural hostess. She is always looking for ways to make things more comfortable & enjoyable for her guests. Duke, who designed the B&B inside & out, has a knack for designing spaces that are attractive, inviting & practical. The beautiful landscaping & foliage are a result of his hard work & attention to detail. It is clear from my many visits that Gail & Duke value presenting visitors with clean spaces.

If you're looking for a place to retreat & relax, I highly recommend the Cottonwood Inn Bed & Breakfast. You won't regret it!

Room Tip: The larger rooms have bigger bathtubs, so if you're looking for a deep soak, opt for those rooms...

My husband and I have been waiting for a B&B to open in Stillwater. When we found Cottonwood Inn we were so excited to try it out and make this our new home in Stillwater when we visit our daughter at school. It was everything and more of what we liove about B&B's. Gail and Duke are warm, fun, and hospitable host. They go our of their way to make your time their pleasant. The rooms are exceptionally clean (which I am very picky about), the food and all the homemade snacks are wonderful,. The comfort of the main room and the outdoor patio area are great places to relax. We love coming here and will stay here as often as we can.

Room Tip: All the rooms are wonderful. Some are larger if you prefer more space.

My family stayed at Cottonwood Inn last weekend along with my brother and his wife from Texas. I must say that Gail met us on arrival and made us feel so welcome. Her and her husband, Duke have recently built and opened this property just outside of the city limits and close to the OSU campus. The eight bedrooms are very comfortable with new furnishings and private baths. The grounds surrounding the home include trees and landscaping and you can even enjoy turkeys walking around on the property. Gail and Duke prepare a wonderful full, hot breakfast every morning with such entrees as breakfast casserole and stuffed french toast with bacon, sausage, fresh fruit and all the trimmings. My family enjoyed coffee together in the mornings in the living room and on the patio while we were waiting on breakfast. It was a very relaxing weekend and we will definitely stay again and look forward to future visits. Hats off to Gail and Duke for being such gracious hosts to my family!

Thank you for your kind words. We really enjoyed your visit and meeting your family and children. What a beautiful family. It was so very hot in Stillwater, however it was great you had an opportunity to enjoy the outside porch in the morning. Not to mention you were enjoying our new pets, the turkeys! I think they have made The Cottonwood Inn their retreat, they don't have a problem being around at all even when we have guests. Once again thank you and we look forward to your stays in the future.

Friendly & casual atmosphere
I’ve stayed twice @ this place, and I was very pleased both times. The place was newly built with nice interior designed (didn’t have time to appreciate the exterior and surroundings). The hotel is conveniently located - just outside the STW city limit close to the OSU STW campus. The only downside of the location was that my cell phone (T-mobile) didn’t pickup the signal most of the time.
The host & hostess were extremely friendly and willing to work with my needs – e.g., breakfast menu/time, rate, schedule, etc. I felt home there with a family-like atmosphere.
I don’t have a lot of experience with B&B, so I can tell the facility and services offered at this place is different from typical hotel chains. There are things that I prefer more/less, but mostly just different –the purpose and design of the reception area, in-room vs. common-use appliances/furniture. Although this place doesn’t have fancy marble reception counter, automated phone systems, and “don’t disturb” door tag, I enjoyed staying here and felt more comfortable with the casual settings than some other “typical” hotels. If you don’t mind dealing with people (as opposed to hotel employees with standardized responses), you will find this place home.

Room Tip: See the hotel's website for the interior design/color, as well as the size.

Thank you very much for your review. I am so pleased you felt comfortable in our surroundings. The issue with the cell phone service is not uncommon, we have Sprint service and we also do not get very good reception. However we have installed a land line and it will always be available to our guest. There will be no charge for any phone calls locally or long distance. Thank you for bringing that to our attention. We look forward to having you again at our Bed and Breakfast. It was a pleasure to serve you. Once again thank you for taking the time to write a review.

We have just completed our stay here, but will not stay again.

-- Business issues --
Rooms: The rooms are lovely, but not equipped for more than a one night stay. No counter at all in the bathroom, only 3 hooks on a wall behind a door for hanging clothes, no access to ice (unless you are willing to invade the private kitchen).

Seating: The place has two gathering rooms, but one has only enough seating for 5 and the other for 6 (if you get cozy). If you have more than 8 people you have to breakfast in the reception room upstairs, while the kitchen is downstairs. Moving chairs around, or looking at the books, or using the wall outlets, was frowned upon.

Trash: No trashcans (other than one tea-cup size in the bathroom). No public trash. We rented the reception room for a wedding reception for 32 people and were told we needed to *take our trash with us* somewhere else when it was over!

Services: Advertised that they change linens every other day, but didn't make beds, or change towels unless you dropped the towels on the floor and then we were told you don't put towels on the floor in a bed and breakfast. No laundry service nor lendable iron/ironing board.

-- Customer Service issues --
Kids: Absolutely not kid-friendly! We rented the whole place and we still had much eye-rolling and many rules imposed such as the kids couldn't go up-stairs (6 and 9 years old).

Attitude: We rented the entire B&B.
a) Although the hotel has 8 rooms, which at 1 couple per room is 16 guests, the hosts were actually dismayed and unhappy to find that we were in fact having 16 people staying.
b) The hosts were very upset that we were still partying at 10pm (remember, we rented the whole place). If you drink more than one of the offered sodas/ day the "hosts" will start asking around to see who's drinking all the soda.
c) The words "this is our home" were often heard. I thought I rented the part that wasn't behind all the signs saying "Private", but they evidently didn't agree!
d) We were there for a wedding, and all the events that go with that, and they wanted all of us in early! There is an electronic lock on the door, but they really don't want you to use it, preferring strongly that you are in before they retire!
e) We agreed we would have breakfast on the day of the wedding at 7:30 because all the girls were going to hair appointments and had to be there at 8am. They put out banana bread and nothing else!

Privacy: *Zero* privacy.
a) Everyone was constantly assaulted by unending conversations. Even private family conversations were invaded by the strangers who were running the business.
b) Every time any one of us left, the hosts wanted to know where we were going. If someone came in with one of us, that person had to be identified, including their relationship to the family. Very invasive and inappropriate.
c) They were horribly rude to guests (the groom's parents) and even came in and sat down to eat with some of us!
d) We overheard at one point that they plan on installing surveillance cameras all over the building. Enjoy being watched from a ceiling camera, future guests!

-- Bottom Line --
We have stayed in multiple bed and breakfast inns, they are usually our preference so we were very surprised at the controlling atmosphere and miserly attitude displayed here!

We at the Cottonwood Inn Bed and Breakfast are very sorry that you did not enjoy your stay as much as your first visit a couple of months previously.

We at Cottonwood Inn Bed and Breakfast work very diligently to make everyone's visit as pleasant and enjoyable as possible and we will take into consideration what was stated and make any changes deemed necessary, however the policies for children are clearly stated on our website:

"Children: To maintain the relaxing atmosphere within the Inn, No children under the age of 16 are permitted."

After this event, the policies regarding large groups are being review and we take it very seriously the concerns that were presented.

Of note to our future guests there will never be cameras in the Bed and Breakfast perhaps in the parking lot so we can see when we have guests arriving.

We had such a nice time staying here. We stayed in the Redbud Room. All the rooms are named after trees on the property. Our room had a queen bed with a walk in shower in the bathroom. It had a great rainhead shower. The full was breakfast was delicious. We had stuffed french toast, an egg and bacon, plus coffee and juice. The house is 2 stories with 2 bedrooms on the main floor. There is a sitting area on 1st and 2nd floor. Our friends stayed at Days Inn and we definitely got the better deal! The host were friendly and accomodating. The B & B is only about 2 miles from downtown and Oklahoma State University. Our activities were at the Expo Center and had the closest accomodations.

Room Tip: Decide if you want a walk in shower or a shower/tub combination, That was the main difference.
