“great place to take visitors”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

I love the history available in a fun and interactive setting. Always a sure winner with kids and adults alike when we have visitors. Because the exhibits change it is always new and interesting.

“Be there.”

I learned a lot about the Cherokee nation. Their store is heart breaking with all the injustices they endured in their history. A proud and noble people.

“The "other" end of the Trail Of Tears”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2012

Ever since I first learned, 45 years ago from a North Carolina Cherokee, about the forced relocation of his tribe in the mid 1830's, I have wanted to see what happened at the end of that tragic Trail, in Oklahoma. Today we visited the Cherokee Heritage Center in Tahlequah, and got much more of an idea of what the outcome was. A review is not a history lesson so I will skip over the lessons and the content and focus only on whether the visit is worth the time, money, and effort.
The Center is informative, imaginative, and very well staffed by members of the current Cherokee Nation, and a friendly staff it is. The Museum can be covered in less than an hour and is very well organized and documented. There is an excellent (and reasonable) gift shop in the building with the Museum. Outside are two restored or re-imagined village complexes: one demonstrates life-style at this end of the Trail, as the displaced Cherokees, stripped of so many of their possessions, rebuilt their lives. The other is the "Ancient Village", which portrays life in 1710, before the influence of European colonizers changed traditional Cherokee life forever The 1710 village is being replaced by a newer, more accurate facility, which will open in May 2013.
The Center is located in a beautiful wooded area with plenty of parking and easy access.

“Just ok”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2012

Guess we were expecting more. A small village is set up but I thought it would be more 'realistic'. The day we went, there were also many school buses in the pkg lot - we knew what we were in for. I'm all for field trips but those are not the days to visit. It was very difficult to see the exhibits. I was also disappointed with the gift shop.
