We've been to art museums all over the US & Europe & we didn't expect the quality we found here to be in Toledo. I'm not being condescending; it is #70 in population in the US. An amazing treat is the glass museum across the street with a collection of art glass from antiquity through the ages in a building built of glass with many donations from Libbey, who founded the Museum of Art. Also, the gift shop is quite a bit above most museum shops [with only books and trinkets] as it has a collector's room with really good items. Don't miss.

I did not expect an art museum of this size and quality in Toledo. It was far and away the best thing we did in the city!

The ancient section was wonderful. The religious section even had part of a monastery/convent in it. I usually don't like the "modern" sections, but this one was interesting. There are really just too many things to mention!

We should have done it first, but we did the glass pavilion last, and although it's very nice, it was a bit of a disappointment after the rest of the museum. The main thing I didn't like was that a lot of the pieces still don't have labels.

I suggest fortifying yourselves with a cup of coffee and a muffin while sitting in the comfy chairs at the pavilion cafe. You'll have a great view of the sculpture garden and front steps as well as interesting glass pieces.

I really wish we'd been there at the right time to see the glass demonstration! Be sure to schedule your visit for a day and time when they're having it. (Check the website for the schedule.) One thing I did learn was how important glass-making in various forms is to the region.

I hope I'll have a chance to return to this fascinating museum soon!

We went to the Toledo Museum of Art in late November on a Friday due to the recent opening of the glass pavillion and had a great time. Toledo has a real gem in its art museum and best of all it is free, not crowded, and the day we were there was open to 10:00 P.M.!

We really enjoyed the museum's large collection of Ancient Egyptian Artifacts/artwork. We also liked the Impressionistic paintings that the musuem had on display. It has two great Van Gogh's and it also has beautiful works from Cezanne and Monet. This museum also has a large number of works from Dutch and English artists from the 1600's and 1700's. The museum has some American and modern art but has a much stronger collection of Eurpoean Art from 1600-1900.

We were a little bit disappointed in the glass pavillion. We found the buidling not to be very impressive at all and the collection not as extensive as expected. In addition, the space was kind of under utilized. There was one exhibit that had glass from ancient times to modern times but none of the glass works in the cases were labeled or described. The exhibit did say there was an installation in progress, so maybe it will improve in the future. The only other exhibit was of modern glass jewerly which we found to be not very interesting.

We felt the glass pavillion would have been a total flop but it was saved by the "hotshop" where they had glass blowing demonstrations every hour the day we were there. It was extremely interesting to see how glass was made and how you can work with glass to make different forms.

Overall, we felt the Toledo Museum of Art is a great value and worth the trip. A great art weekend could be had by taking one day to visit the Toledo Museum of Art and driving 45 minutes north to Detroit to visit the Detroit Insitute of Art on another day.

Agree with all the other reviews. Was not expecting much given the rest of Toledo but this is the best! A small, uncrowded gem with exceptional pieces. We spent several hours there and didn't see half of it. The new Glass Pavilion is being built across the street but isn't open yet. We will definitely return to see the rest of the museum and new building. Next time we will visit Toledo on a Saturday instead of a Sunday/Monday since the rest of town closes up tight. We barely found anything to eat for breakfast. Where was everyone?
