“Mecca Motel is Historical Landmark but keep it as a museum and not a place to sleep :(”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2012

Mecca is a city in the Hejaz and the capital of Makkah province in Saudi Arabia. As the birthplace of Muhammad and a site of the composition of the Quran, Mecca is regarded as the holiest city in the religion of Islam and a pilgrimage to it known as the Hajj is obligatory upon all able Muslims. This motel is NOTHING like this. A motel named after one of the world's Wholyest and sacredest cities should be cleaner and not scamming. The sign lists free Mini Golf and free heated Pool. The pool was drained. I didn't check to see if it was heated though (maybe it was). If it was without water but still heated, it wasn't false advertising I guess. ALSO, the Mini Golf looked desolate, dirty, overgrown, and the ride there ate my quarter. I went back to the front desk to get a refund but they said it would take 4 to 6 weeks for the refund to be mailed to me. They also told me if I wanted a refund quicker, I had to talk to maintenance. Guess what, NO MAINTENANCE!!!!!!!! Which isn't a surprise bc everything was broke and the mirror on the wall was crooked. Also, there was a pill in the bathroom window with a dead gnat laying next to it on it's back with it's dead, dried out, and krispy legs sticking in the air. Also, there were strange smudges on the head board, if you know what I mean gross.

Room Tip: Ask for the executive suite. It has free pops to drink and corns to eat.

We recently stayed at the Mecca Motel for a trip to Cedar Point. After taxes the bill came to around $55 which was pretty cheap for staying so close to the park. I'll get this out of the way now, the best thing about this motel is its proximity to Cedar Point. Pulling in to the parking lot we knew picked a stinker. We were greeted with peeling paint, broken screen doors, and piles of trash stacked up outside the doors of several rooms. Inside the room was little better. Our room had a strange odor that we decided was a mix of bug spray and Lysol. The window sill was rotten and stained. There were spider webs in the window and the outside faces of the blinds had a thick fuzzy coating of dust. The bed spreads has multiple cigarette burns in them. To be fair the bed sheets were fairly clean, and the beds were comfortable. The bathroom was dated, but very clean compared to the bedroom. The TV was OK. A few of the channels picked up interference from the window AC unit in the room. The room was fairly quiet, with the exception of the noise from passing trains, which negated the need for an alarm clock. Their website shows a picture of their free miniature golf course. I'd bet that picture is 10-15 years old. It is overgrown with weeds and most of the turf is ripped up. I never saw where to get balls or clubs. Other than its closeness to CP, the only positives I can think of are Jack's deli across the street (yum!) and the liquor store next door which was important because we needed a few drinks to relax us enough to sleep in that room. If you are trying to save money and are coming to CP from the west, I'd recommend staying at the Motel 6 in Toledo (which is where we spent our 2nd night.) It was $10 cheaper, and much nicer. Its only 45 minutes from CP, so you could leave the hotel at 8:30 am and still get to CP with time to spare before they open at 10.

Stayed here June 4-7 with 2 others in their "family suite". This consisted of two bedrooms and a bathroom. The good: The room was clean, the beds were comfortable, the water was hot. The bad: This place needed to be renovated a LONG time ago. The walls on the outside of the building were peeling, and the inside had wallpaper that was coming off the walls as well as paint. The furniture was VERY old as well were the mirrors that were chipped and showing their age. The carpet had stains, and probably needed to be replaced at least 10 years ago. The price for the place was cheap at $59 compared to the ridiculous prices the others were charging on this particular weekend. WATCH OUT when you look for motels around Cedar Point. Many are old, run down, and NOT CLEAN. This place, however, was clean at least. Also, the mini golf looks like a course that was abandoned a long time ago. I did not see the pool, just a huge pile of chairs so I can't comment on that. I can't really recommend this motel, unless the other places I did like (Comfort Inn, Comfort Inn Suites, Motel 6, Red Rood Inn, Breakers Express) are outrageously priced. (The Motel 6 was $110 a night this weekend!) Oh one last thing, bring earplugs. There are trains that go by all night blowing their horns as well. I knew about this so I was prepared.

We wanted to visit Sandusky to meet our friends during Christmas and was looking for good price hotel.

At my surprise hotel staff was very nice. Pool was well maintained and my son enjoyed it very much.
Definitely stay there again whenever going back to Sandusky, OH....

Travelling through Ohio, we chose this motel because it was a good value and we thought for one night it should be fine. It was actually better than anticipated, the pool was fine, and a simple continental breakfast in the morning did the trick for getting back on the road. Small bathroom, small rooms, but pretty well kept for an older establishment. The only downside is the train tracks nearby! If you're a light sleeper, you may not want to stay here.

  • Liked — The pool was actually very nice.
  • Disliked — The regular train traffic.
