“Soaked (wet & no more money)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2006

Kalahari is many things and school age children will have a good time at the waterpark. A few comments I will add:

Consider total cost of stay
* Breakfast buffet is $12.95/per & $6.95/under 6 yrs. My 6 yr old girl doesn't eat $2 of anything.
Even eating at snack bar is roughly $30 for a family of four.
* Dinner buffett is $17.95 & $12.95/ under 6. Again my 6 yr old eats $2 per meal at best.
Verdict = we ate breakfast at Cracker Barrel and dinner at a local restaurant in Huron named Marconi's (recommend...nice)
* Local calls $.75
* Internet ~$11/night
Overall, if money is tight consider staying at the Hampton Inn or similar getting more inclusives and just using the waterpark. This saves approximatelys $100+ based on a family of four over two days.

Building Design:
* Lacks a nice interior and exterior design as in Great Wolf Lodge. Just a rambling building...I was disappointed.
* Parking lot 300-500 feet from building with bridge walkway connecting the two. My view on this is mixed. Terribly inconvenient and stupid in one sense. But...this is actually great for all overweight and out of shape Americans. If attending in December - February you may want to avoid walking through all the snow & ice and stay at Great Wolf.
* Drive up area is horrendous. They did not design this with enough room for all the vehicles coming and going. Incredibly stupid...people directing you as soon as you get on the property on how to quickly drop off you bags and race off to the parking lot 500 feet away..you'll see what I mean.
Room Comment - Safari Bunkhouse
Our room include a small separate room with no door that had bunkbeds & TV. Only problem was there was "no door" or anything covering the entry way and two "windows" overlooking our bed/TV. This is not ideal for putting the kids to bed and staying up with the wife to watch TV (kind of bright). Again, this is the kind of stupidity Great Wolf doesn't have. We solved the window problem by stuff an extra pillow or two in their place.
Finally, attending a waterpark does remind me that American's eat too much and exercise too little.

First of all, there are good things about this resort....it is beautiful inside, the waterpark was great (despite the water being cold...brr) and our kids had a blast, which was the most important thing.

However, like other reviewers, I fear that until there is a change in management and staff, this place will continue to go downhill.

We are very 'easy to please' type people and keeping a sense of humor is what made our trip enjoyable. Typically we enjoy staying in hotels like the Hampton Inn.

We split a village suite, between three families. The room was new & beautiful. It was missing a couple of things from the inventory list, so if you choose to stay here make sure you check everything on the list so you do not get charged for them. We went to the local grocery stores and cooked meals in our room, which was really convenient.

We made use of Kahunaville one night, it was virtually empty and the service was so slow that we wished we'd just cooked a meal in our suite ourselves. We also went to the pottery place which the kids enjoyed.

However, room service was a joke. Each day room service would ask us what time we wanted our room cleaned. We asked for the afternoon, as we would be in the waterpark. The first day, they made up only 2 beds out of the 5 in the village suite which we thought was peculiar, as why did they even bother. One out of the 3 bathrooms was never cleaned and the dirty towels were left in a pile on the floor. We called for towels and the room service manager for that floor apologised and began badmouthing all the staff and how they never get anything done when she's not there.
For the next two days our beds were never made. I'm not sure what they did in our room. I do know they were there, as atleast our towels were replenished. Our suite was never vaccuumed.
We had to leave notes to ask for basic necesseties, things like garbage bags and dishwasher detergent. We had to call down several times for these.
On day 2 we left a note asking for a clean dishtowel, and a few extra ones, as we were cleaning our own dishes. (Even though it is stated that this is a service they provide, we cleaned our own dishes out of habit and because it was obvious we would just be flustered if we left it to them). Our request for the dishtowel was met with our dirty wet dishtowel thrown back in the drawer. It was at this point we really became irked.
We called to speak with a room service manager who just apologised...something they were becoming very good at.

I'm including the details not to nitpick, but I feel that a resort should be able to provide, at the very least, basic room service, as well as what is promised in the price you pay. Negative things are bound to come up occasionally, but this was consistent problems and with management who could not have cared less.

We have written two polite letters, first to the Kalahari and then specifically to a senior manager to inform them about these problems, wondering if perhaps there was a reason. We have received no responses.

The resort looks good because it is new...for now. I gave this review one star as it's obvious current management does not care about maintenance nor about its repeat customers. It also leaves me to wonder about the maintenance in the waterpark.

If you want to visit the Kalahari I suggest staying in a clean hotel off property. It just wasn't worth the money or hassle.

For Spring Break this year we decided to try an indoor waterpark and picked the Kalahari. My children who are 7 and 11 had a wonderful time in the waterpark. When they were tired of the water they were off to the large gameroom and the dry play area which is several levels high, has slides, tunnels to climb through, foam balls to launch, etc. They had as much fun there as they did in the waterpark. We stayed in a Nomad Room and found it to be sufficient for our needs. This room type featured 2 queen beds, a fireplace and balcony plus it had a microwave oven and a small refrigerator which was very helpful. During our trip the water in all of the pools was very comfortable - not cold at all. I did notice however that one corner of the waterpark (near the hot tub with the waterfalls) was quite a bit colder than other areas. If we went into that hot tub, we came out shivering. The hotel was very clean in all areas. The restaurants were pricy but there are numerous other restaurants just a short drive down the road. There also is a Meijers and Walmart about a mile down where you could pick up groceries and bring it with you (I saw lots of coolers going in and out of the hotel during our 3 day stay). While we did enjoy our stay here, there were a couple of problem areas. The two days we were there for the full day, we didn't have maid service in our room until after 5:00 p.m. They didn't clean the coffee maker out,left our dirty coffee mugs and didn't leave coffee for the next morning. We called the Front Desk about the issue and they handled it promptly. Be prepared on checkout day to haul all your belongings by hand to your vehicle - luggage carts are nowhere to be found. Before you get settled into your Nomad Room, check the blinds on your balcony door. The blinds are set inside the glass and only half of ours would shut which left big gaps where people could see into our room. In spite of these inconveniences, we did enjoy our stay here and will definitely be back for another visit.

We stayed 03/28/06. The staff was very friendly. My 9yr old and 15 year old loved it! Got right in the restaurants no problem. No lines in the waterpark. Rooms clean and big.

I stayed here with my parents, and younger brother and sister and we all loved it. My dad and brother had so much fun on the flowrider and my mom, sister, and I stayed by the outdoor pool. The pizza place was pretty good. The breakfast buffet restaurant was good and we had very good service. ( not sure why others have complained ). I talked to people at the front desk who told me about all the future expansions like the outdoor waterpark and more rides indoors. Our room was nice just your basic package room, but clean and nice still the same. We ate at kahunaville one night for dinner and all got up on stage to dance and sing along to "Carwash"- that was lots of fun. The staff seemed to like working there which was nice for us too. Overall, a really nice vacation and we plan on coming back in the summer again.

The staff was terrific.

The room was very spacious & nice. (African Queen Suite)

I felt my children were safe.

The restaurants overpriced.

Internet cost extra.

There is only one loading and unloading area-Very congested.

The Pool water was MUCH too cold. The locker room showers were freezing.

The extra's were overpriced (Pottery, hairwraps gift shoppe, snack bar).

My daughter's pottery was tipped over during firing. They said they would fix it and send it to us. 6 weeks and 3 phone calls later and still no resolution.

We will probably give another resort a try.
