“clueless”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2014

When we're met at the registration desk by someone apologizing, that should have been a clue. When we got to the room and the door keys didn't work, that should have been a clue.
When we asked for an ice bucket and got 2 paper cups, that should have been a clue.
When we had to walk outside back to our room from the water park, that's a clue.
When the towel bar fell off the wall, that should have been a clue.
We missed all of these clues, along with having to make coffee in the bathroom because of broken receptacles. Having to go to the front desk for towels because we never saw anyone from housekeeping even after calling. Take it from us, save your money and go to one of the more expensive water parks in town. The people operating this "Resort" have no clue what they are doing. We figured it would not be on the same level as Great Wolf or Kalahari but this was ridicules. Because of construction you had to navigate a maze of hallways that were not marked in any way. This led to me and my family running outside in sub-zero weather (we were wet by the way) in order to get to our room. This was preferable to wandering aimlessly for another 20 minutes trying to get past the construction. When we did find an employee and asked how to get around the construction they said it was complicated and a long walk. The only reason I gave this a "Poor" rating instead of "terrible" is that the actual water park was not bad. Not on par with the big 3 but the kids still had fun. The flooring at the water park is extremely slippery, I saw several people, kids and adults, go down. Someone is going to get severely hurt and the "slippery when wet" signs will not protect them from litigation. Maui Sands need to remove the word "Resort" they are anything but.

Room Tip: If you want a good room choose one at Great Wolf Lodge, Kalahari, or Castaway Bay.

Dear Thomas D:

We are very sorry that you were disappointed with your visit to the Maui Sands Resort & Indoor Waterpark. We want all of our guests to have a wonderful stay with us.

There are not any good excuses for some of the problems you incurred. Keys should work and rooms should have towels and ice buckets. We have to do a better job of providing good guest service.

Unfortunately, the resort has two buildings. Some of our guests prefer the more direct route which does require a short walk across the parking lot. To stay inside, guests have to follow several hallways that lead to the main building. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Please call us directly so we can talk about your visit in greater detail. We hope your and your family will stay with us again in the future.

Our stay here stemmed from a Groupon deal we purchased. We arrived on Thursday which is highly recommended before the weekend rush. The front desk staff was very nice, also the greeter Doc was very nice. We got our room, which was in a great location,we were in room 4106 main hallway across from the main dining area and waterpark.

ROOM: Very nice clean roomy, loved the fact that there was a kids area. They had their own space with the bunk beds and t.v., and we grown ups had our space A+++. Bathroom was clean, door handle was broken but it was overall a nice room.

Water Park: Very nice place. Very clean looks like it has just been remodeled. Public area's were clean, lots of tables and chairs to choose from. Water park staff was very friendly and helpful. Kids had fun. Not crowded on Thursday and Friday from until Friday after 4pm it started getting packed. That's why I'm glad we came Thursday so the kids could have more of an opportunity to enjoy the park when it was not so crowed. One question though why are there no backboards or nets in basketball pool area??? IJS

Dining: Pizza, Pasta, pop, and dessert was ok. Pizza was not as bad as some reviews I read, overall it was good, kids liked it so that's what counts. breakfast was good no complaints. Friday morning was not busy but Saturday it was filled to capacity so get there early.

One Complaint: The snack bar on Saturday. PLEASE PLEASE get Ms. Karen some help management!!!! With all the guests getting the pizza meal deal, and people wanting snacks one person at one register can not handle it. She had 10 people in line, she was taking orders, making drinks, slushes it was overwhelming to say the least I was in line for two ice creams for over 10 MINUTES!!!! UNACCEPTABLE!!!! My Ice cream was melting that's crazy. So Please get another register, and some one else to help expedite drinks, nachos etc. to get guests in and out faster. On top of that it was FREEZING in that area get some HEAT!
Overall good experience would stay again during the week not a full weekend.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms in 4100 which right by the dinning area and waterpark.

Thank you for telling us about your visit to Maui Sands Resort & Indoor Waterpark. We are very interested to know about our guest's experience.

We were pleased that you had an enjoyable visit to the resort. We want all of our guests to have a wonderful stay. (Backboards and nets are on order.) We appreciate your kind comments about our employees. Doc is a very special individual and sets an excellent example for every one.

Your recommendation about the Snack Shop is on target. It can get busy and stay busy very quickly. We have to do a better job of allocating labor to this location.

Thanks for visiting Maui Sands. We hope you and your family will visit us again very soon. Your patronage is greatly appreciated.

Our family just returned from an overnight at Maui Sands this weekend and thought we’d chime in with our experience.

We have visited Castaway Bay and the Great Wolf Lodge in recent years, so we thought we’d take advantage of a Groupon that sounded pretty good and check this one out. Sandusky is overrun with indoor waterpark hotels, and you’d think that the competition would drive quality up and prices down in the area, but we were not overly impressed with either at Maui Sands. The low Groupon price we paid was entirely fair, but the ‘regular’ room rates are very, very much too high for this place. Shop the coupons and don’t pay full price!

We were surprised, after our visit, by Maui Sands’ high rating on TripAdvisor compared with Castaway Bay, which we found to be comparable (or better) in nearly all areas of importance, including price. Maui Sands does not hold a candle to the Great Wolf Lodge, which is worth every penny of the higher price you’d pay to stay there. (You can compare this review with my TripAdvisor reviews of the other two places, for a sense of how they differ.) (Note that Castaway Bay and Maui Sands both sell waterpark ‘day passes’ for those who do not want to stay in the hotel, while Great Wolf Lodge is open only to overnight guests, so that affects the size of the crowd and relative craziness in the waterpark during the day. Kalahari has the best reputation in town, but also costs an arm and a leg, so we haven’t tried it yet.)

Comparisons aside, here is our experience with Maui Sands.

I’ll start with the food, as this was one of the more disappointing things in the hotel. There is a beautiful restaurant area, but no full-service restaurant. The only food service available during the day is from the walk-up grill counter attached to the waterpark, which has very friendly staff and makes fast food to order: French fries, hot dogs, frozen pizzas, nachos, soda and the like. There is almost nothing in the way of fresh or healthy food available, and heaven help you if you are vegetarian or have food allergies. Pack your own, and ignore the signs warning ‘no outside food.’ (You can tell them that when they provide something worth eating in the waterpark grill, you’ll buy it, but until then, you’ll bring your own. Perhaps that will move that process along?)

The breakfast buffet was hot and abundant, and the staff extraordinarily friendly and efficient, but the food was mediocre at best: cornflakes, white bread, plasticky scrambled eggs, cardboard-textured reheated pancakes, frozen sausages, and fried potatoes with ketchup. Nothing, again, very healthy or fresh. They’re clearly trying to do the best they can with limited resources, but it ends up feeling (and tasting) like food made on the cheap. I was glad I’d read earlier reviews of the breakfast and packed some fruit and vegetables to fill in the nutrient gaps.

OK, so if you bring your own food, you can get past the limitations of the kitchen. It is quite nice. It is warm, clean, well-appointed, in good repair, and well-staffed on weekends with a large number of polite, attentive, vigilant lifeguards. Our children loved it, and we found many of the safety features to be well-planned and helped us feel relaxed about being there with them.

We were there on a Friday and a Saturday, and while the Friday crowd was quite manageable, Saturday was sold out. It was an absolute zoo. I recommend going early on a weekday if at all possible, if you want to avoid waiting in lines to go down waterslides, and other craziness associated with large crowds. The centerpiece of the waterpark is the “lazy river,” which is really nice and very relaxing! When the park is crowded, however, this river becomes a traffic jam of people trying to relax in inner tubes while being jostled and crushed by ten-year-olds racing each other through the crowd and crashing into each other. Not so fun for the rest of us.

While weekdays are definitely best for avoiding crowds, the waterpark is not open every day of the week and has limited hours on some days, so check on that before buying! We were disappointed that it was not open later on Friday night and earlier Saturday morning, but the hours were OK. I suspect from other reviews that they are extremely understaffed on low-attendance weekdays, so keep that in mind as well – sounds like some corners are being cut there.

There are four big water slides, all of which are height-limited – nobody under 42” can go on any of them, and most are closed to people under 48”. Important to know if you’re traveling with a very short person! Our kids were prepped ahead of time that certain slides were off-limits, so that was no trouble for us. There are also four smaller slides and plenty of other attractions that are tons of fun for little ones, so they had plenty of fun things to do. I really appreciated that the pool floor surface in the baby and toddler areas was a soft rubber, rather than the usual prickly sanded concrete pool floor. This was a very nice plus for those of us who are tired of patching up little toes and replacing swimsuits torn to shreds by jagged pool surfaces.

The waterpark layout is confusing – you find yourself walking in circles trying to get to certain attractions, as many are cut off from one another by the long ‘lazy river.’ But it’s not impossible to manage; just give yourself time to learn the layout, or get a birds-eye view from the upper-story balconies overlooking the park before plunging in. This makes the place feel bigger than it is, which is sort of nice.

The water and air temperature in the waterpark is generally quite comfortable, which has not always been our experience in other places (especially Castaway Bay), so that was a nice surprise. This is most assuredly not the case in the rest of the hotel, as I’ll discuss more below.

They have $5.00/day lockers in the pool area, but there are not very many and are not very big, so keep that in mind when planning what to do with valuables and other possessions.

Changing areas are small, limited and not very nice, though clean enough if you are there early in the day. (By late afternoon the bathrooms were pretty yucky, slimy wet floors littered with debris and wet clumps of paper. Shoes are a must. Regular cleaning would be better.) There is only one very small wastebasket in the women’s bathroom, which is inadequate to the task of keeping up with diapers, paper towels, and other waste, and overflows. The changing areas have low stools and one small hook each, but no other counters or other areas where you can set things up off the floor to keep them dry. We ended up going home in damp clothes that had dropped in puddles on the floor while trying to change in the crowded space. Lots of extra plastic grocery bags to separate wet stuff from dry was an important item we were glad we packed.

One thing to be aware of in the waterpark is that the floor surface is very pretty, but is also exceedingly slippery when wet (and yes, it’s a waterpark, so ‘when wet’ means, of course, all the time). For safety reasons, water shoes are prohibited on all waterslides, but you definitely need good shoes in order to get around the park without breaking your neck, so be prepared for some awkward logistics on this point. Watching small children slipping and crashing all around me, I was deeply grateful for our water shoes, especially on my small children. But I have to say, this is supposed to be a bare-feet space, so there’s some poor planning in evidence here. There is absolutely no reason the staff should have to post yellow “caution- slippery floor” signs by the dozens all over the waterpark – if it’s slippery when it’s wet, you need to do something about the surface because it is clearly unacceptable for its purpose! Maui Sands owner, take notice: you need to get something done about that floor before somebody gets badly hurt (and sues you for criminal neglect for letting some fool designer put in a treacherously slick floor in a place where hundreds of children are running around in bare, wet feet.)

Ok, so that brings us to the next piece of tremendously poor planning in this hotel. It is obvious that nobody looked at the floor plan at any point and asked the question, “how is this environment going to be experienced by hundreds of wet people in swimsuits?” Everywhere besides the waterpark itself is drafty and poorly heated. We were cold the entire time we were there, except when we were inside the waterpark.

The hallways are the worst. They were frigid. The whole place has the appearance of an old motel whose corridors have been hastily enclosed with thin sheets of plywood and Plexiglas, then carpeted and paneled and Hawaiian-decorated within an inch of their lives. But the plywood-and-Plexiglas wall is only occasionally interrupted by a small heat register, entirely inadequate to heating what appears to be an un-insulated space. And the hallways between areas in the hotel are a twisting maze, which means a rather long walk from the waterpark to your room. And that’s if you DON’T get lost, always an easy possibility, though signage seems to have improved since earlier reviewers criticized the lack of it. To get from our room to the waterpark required a rather long walk in hallways that, during our visit, were probably about 38 degrees. This is really unacceptable for a hotel packed to the gills with people moving around in wet hair, skin and clothes.

There was no relief from the halls in our room. It had clearly been unoccupied for a while, since the thermostat was set at FORTY-TWO DEGREES when we walked in to the room. While we’re all for conserving energy by turning down the heat in rooms that are not being used, you have to turn it back UP before people are going to occupy them! We turned the heat on full blast the moment we walked in (wet from the water park, remember, and shivering from our long trek through the arctic hallways), but even three hours later, the tiny heater had only managed to heat the room to 64 degrees. We spent the rest of our evening in the room piled in layers of sweaters and hats. (The staff was very responsive and came in to check the heater, but said there was nothing to be done – it just takes a long time for these little heaters to warm up even a small space, they said, apologetically. They also brought a pile of extra blankets – there were none in the room at all. The room finally got to a reasonable temperature by about midnight – six hours later. Maybe we should have just decamped to the well-heated waterpark and slept in there.)

For temperature, the lobby is also badly planned. Large sliding front doors open only a few feet from the registration area, letting in blasts of icy air throughout the entire lobby. (It was well below freezing outside while we were there, so this was doubly miserable.) If you arrive early to enjoy the waterpark before checking in, they’ll give you park passes but won’t let you check in early, so you need to come back out of the park at check-in time in order to get your room keys, which means waiting in an absurdly long line right in front of these ice-blast doors… in a wet swimsuit.

One more piece of poor planning is inadequate information for guests. It is hard to figure out what the hours and locations of things are, as there is no guest information book in the room. You have to rely on a grainy photocopied map to get around the building, which is confusing. There seems to be construction going on in some areas, so some corridors and stairwells are lined with dirty bootprints, heavy construction dust and paint chips. There should be a ‘pardon our dust’ message on the website to warn travelers about this situation – it can be jarring to turn a corner only to find it blocked with an unfriendly steel accordion gate, with no explanation of why that shadowy hallway is forbidden. It feels like Hogwarts without the friendly ghosts.

Except for the drafts and the construction barriers, the environment here is pretty nice. The interior – especially the open restaurant/lobby area – is nicely designed, even charming. The restaurant area is a very pleasant place to eat (even when you’re eating off of Styrofoam plates with plasticware – a bit strange in such an elegant surrounding). The Hawaiian theme only occasionally veers into the realm of gaudy (‘pinup girls’ wearing leis -- and not much else -- are rather tasteless choices for signage, for example).

The wi-fi internet connection was good and worked well. The rooms were well-appointed with microwave, TV’s, table and chairs, coffeepot and refrigerator. Appliances all worked well and were very clean. Rooms were spotless. They’ve found garbage bags to fit the funny-sized wicker wastebaskets since an earlier reviewer complained about it, and it was actually nice to have larger-than-usual wastebaskets available in the room. Beds – including the narrow bunk beds in the charming kids’ sleeping area – were quite comfortable (especially with the extra blankets that should have been there already but were delivered in minutes once we requested them). The rooms are rather small but comfortable, well-lit, and pretty.

The best thing this place has going for it is the staff. We found everyone – from lifeguard to kitchen staff to housekeeping to maintenance – to be generous, polite, cheerful, hospitable to a fault, and eager to please. In all things they give the impression of a great group of people who have been burdened with the task of making the best of an inadequate facility. They seem to be inadequately staffed for the amount of work they’re trying to do, and they are bearing the extra work with pride and cheer and fervor, but they just don’t seem able to keep up with it. Whoever owns this place needs to pony up for some more staff and a few well-placed improvements, or this place is going to go back out of business. In the waterpark-heavy world of Sandusky, they’re really not offering an experience unique enough for this place to be missed.

In short - do I recommend a visit to Maui Sands? Well, yes, I suppose. IF you a room near the waterpark, IF you go at the right time of the week, and IF you get a Really Good Deal on your room. Otherwise, stay at a cheap local motel and buy a day pass to Maui Sands, pack some healthy food to eat while you visit, and drop some generous tips on the hardworking staff while you’re there.

Room Tip: Ask for a room near the waterpark and/or near an elevator, especially if you are traveling with lots...

Dear Comtessa52:

Thank you for telling us about your visit to the Maui Sands Resort & Indoor Waterpark. Your submission provided a very detailed review of your stay.

We appreciate your recommendation and are pleased you enjoyed the waterpark, the rooms were comfortable and our Team Members treated you properly.

However, we are disappointed that some aspects of your visit were unsatisfactory. The severity of this past winter made it difficult to keep the lobby and hallways warm.

We also need to provide better, more detailed information to our guests that will make their stay easy and more enjoyable.

We hope you will visit with us again and your stay will be even better than the first.

Your patronage is very important to us.

This is the first review I have ever written for anything but I was so touched by the treatment that I received from the staff of Maui Sands that I felt I had to write something. My family recently had a reservation for a family trip to Maui Sands. Shortly before our trip I had a family emergency come up that was going to affect our trip. I called the resort to see if what they could do to help. I can honestly say that I have never had a business be so helpful, kind and understanding as those that work at Maui Sands. They went far and above anything that I ever expected to help not only rearrange the reservation but to accommodate my family's needs during the emergency. My children ended up going to the resort with their grandparents and they reported to me that it was the best place they have ever been. Considering how much they enjoyed it and how I was treated, Maui Sands will be on the top of my list for our next family trip.

We're here now
I purchased a groupon for the night for six people with dinner and water park passes...the dinner for six didn't feed six of us, The water was cold along with the hallways, and the arcade haha what a joke there were two moter cycle games in which only one worked there was an out of order sign on the air hockey,a shooting game and a couple other driving games..To say the least this hasn't been a fun get away from all the cold weather , because its cold here as well. I'm very dissapointed the water was so cold my son who is 20 months old couldnt enjoy himself and I had a hard time as well..And as for a room for six ......well if all your doing is sleeping o.k, but when you have two adults, four teenage boys and a 20month old this place is a joke.

Dear Toothfactory:

We are sorry you were disappointed with your stay. Overall, the Groupon coupon package has been popular with our guests.

The waterpark is heated to 80-84 degrees. However, with the cold winter temperatures and doors constantly opening, it doesn't always feel that warm.

Admittedly, the arcade is in disrepair. We are in the process of considering some future renovations.

I hope you will reconsider and stay with us again the future. We are sure you will have a more enjoyable stay.

I am in the midst of a weekend stay and it has been more than disappointing thus far. Initially, I was excited to come here due to the positive reviews and reasonable price but right now I am kicking myself for not staying a kahlahari. There are no elevators (we were not told this until we arrived) so we had to struggle with dragging our heavy bags up a flight of stairs! The place is a confusing maze with inadequate signage inside and out so it's difficult to navigate. We bought food at the restaurant...very high prices. The pizza was terrible and had no taste other than the unnecessarily spicy sauce. Our room is very small and we feel a bit cramped. There is dust and some sort of white substance dried up on the furniture... The room is so cold! The space heater in the sink area is supposed to service the entire room but the thermostat reads 67 degrees. Called the front desk and asked for extra blankets but they never came. Maintenance came and said, "that's some good heat" and that the fans in the room should help circulate the heat. As I type this, I am huddled in bed using a bath towel as an extra blanket. We are supposed to stay another night but I don't know if I can stand it. Did I mention that I am cold??? The staff just keeps saying that everything is a work in progress. From what I have seen thus far, I am not sure that this place is ready for the public yet. Doc said that management reads these reviews everyday...I hope so.

Thank you for telling us about your visit to Maui Sands.

We are sorry you weren't warm enough in your room and that you were disappointed with the complimentary breakfast buffet. The extremely cold winter has made it difficult to feel warm anywhere. We receive many compliments about our pizza and breakfast buffet.

We also apologize for not informing you that we do not have elevator service in the Cabana Building. Room assignments are not finalized until the day of check-in. The elevator in the main building is operational.

We hope you will visit with us again in the future. We are sure you will have a much more enjoyable stay.

The resort itself was great, to the last detail!!! Every staff member we met just seemed to love their jobs. I took the time to get to know the people there and every single one was just so receptive to take a little time and it ended up bighting both our lives! Doc was absolutely indispensable and a breath of fresh air. We met him at check in and just from that interaction, we already planned on coming back!!!! The water park was EXTREMLY clean and very well appointed, nice layout too. I cant wait to return soon. It was a much better experience than Kalahari by far. At that place (too big) you are nothing more than a number, but at Maui Sands everyone in our family was made to feel like we were part of you're family. Bravo Maui sands, you have lifelong fans!!! :-)

Room Tip: Very quiet rooms
