My husband and I were quite worn out and hungry having spent 11 hours at Cedar Point. We checked into the America's Best Value, and loved that we just had a few steps from the lobby to eat a nutritional dinner, after a day of snacks and fried food at the park.
We visited @ 10pm on Saturday, July 14th. The hostess (I wish we knew her name to give her credit) was professional as well as friendly. A wonderful first impression. Her smile gave us an an extra burst of energy. We asked for a cozy, relaxing booth. We saw her looking at her chart. Two other servers had three marks beside them. A server named Caitlin only had two. The hostess asked if we'd like to sit in the lounge, as there were booths there (and, as a former server, I was guessing that may have been Caitlin's station). We looked in, and it just looked a bit too crowded and noisy for us, due to the sensory overload we had at the park. We asked the hostess if we could please have a booth in the uncrowded dining room. "Of course," she said, with a smile.
We commend this hostess for trying to evenly distribute tables to the servers on the floor. We were equally impressed that she heeded our request with a smile and a 'no problem at all' attitude.
Fortunately, we did get Caitlin! What a DELIGHT she was!!! She was one of the friendliest, knowledgeable and attentive servers (without being overbearing) that we've encountered in a while. More on her later ...
We both ordered the 10oz. Fillet Mignon. At only $18, we considered this a value, as we have paid $30 for a good fillet in the past, with no sides. Sides, salad and rolls are included. He got the JUMBO baked potato, I got a huge helping of fresh steamed broccoli, done to perfection - not soggy, not raw - JUST RIGHT. We got a huge salad bowl to share with cheese, bacon, garden fresh tomato wedges. It could have served 6. We also got 6-8 homemade dinner rolls with whipped honey butter (I'm enjoying one we brought home as I write this). We both ordered the fillets medium rare, and they were done exactly to our liking with just enough seasoning to enhance, and not overpower.
Again, Caitlin was fantastic. It was not crowded around closing time. So, we were able to chat her up a bit. Again, I was impressed. I remember waiting tables, and, at closing time, most servers are more interested in getting their sidework done so they can bolt as soon as they can. Not Caitlin. She listened to our stories of our fantastic time at Cedar Point. Most impressive, she bragged on and on how fantastic the chefs and kitchen staff were. She bragged about her job, which was evident that she really loves her job and cares. SOOO IMPRESSIVE!!! When she was bragging about the awesome kitchen staff, she mentioned that they personally introduced her to different styles of food, which she loved, because her family is British, and she was raised on British food. We thought this highly impressive, as it shows a tight relationship to the rest of the staff and a 'team-effort' working environment. Caitlin showed us that she's not just in it for the tips. She really loves and believes in the restaurant. How refreshing!
Thanks to a great hostess, great server, and great food, it was simply a perfect meal and experience for us.
