“Great Place to stay--Just close enought to everything”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2012

It was only 10-15 minutes from Wheeling Casino, Olgebay, and Cabella's shopping complex. Clean, nice hotel, quiet, also our room was 2nd story highway side---and no noise.. and nice breakfast bar. Great deal for location. Only complaint was our refriderator was broken, but as we didn't use/need it--not a big problem. I loved the beds--as firmer mattresses--my husband--who prefers pillowtops was not as happy, but still managed to sleep comfortably. We would stay here again if in the area.

Stayed one night while traveling across country. Inn was fine the significant exception that room was on the Interstate side of the Inn. Could not sleep because of noise from the highway.

Room Tip: Do not stay here if you cannot get a room on that is not facing the highway.

This HIE does not meet HIE standards, especially for the price. The place aged appreciably during the several years since we stayed there. We've stayed at a dozen HIEs during the past year, and this easily falls to the bottom of the HIE scale. Most of the other HIEs were in excellent condition and, by comparison, far superior -- as though this HIE is part of some other hotel chain. The word we use to describe this HIE is shabby. Stale is another word. Way overpriced. We got the non-smoking room we asked for but there was prominent cigarette smell upon entering our room, which persisted. Fortunately, the window opened part way to help us air out. The fridge worked but what a deep dent across its door. There were cobwebs in the room. That said, bedding/sheets were fresh and the king suite is spacious. Breakfast was typical good HIE breakfast, and the staff kept it fresh. Our wake-up call did come half-an-hour late, however. Pool is okay, fitness room tiny. As Priority Club Gold members approaching Platinum, we received no special greeting. Oh, and the "business center" is part of the breakfast area; could not access internet, staff did not know password when we really could've used the connectivity due to an early, major winter storm incoming.

Our room was clean, but the kingsizedbed was uncomfortable. The bed felt like I was sleeping in a hole. The pillows were few and uncomfortable. The TV was lower than the bed and was hard to view. Propping the sub standard pillows up to view TV was useless. The temperature outside was about 35 degrees but the room was extremely hot. We turned the thermostat down to 62, and only ran the fan, but the blower was loud and rattled. We have stayed here before, but this stay was unbearable. The parking lot was full with construction trucks and we had to park in the AAA lot behind the hotel. Mud was tracked in the doorway, hallway, elevator, and dining area. We ate breakfast elsewhere as the food looked old and unappealing.

Room Tip: Bring your own pillows and ask if the heat/AC is working properly.

For proximity next to restaurants, etc you could not ask for a better place, but the hotel itself is not the greatest for extended stays. The hotel is very noisy with voices and hallway door banging very noticeable in your room as the walls are thin. The housekeeping staff uses the metal door latch while cleaning instead of just propping the door open. The result is way too much noise when they bang the doors against the latch continuously when cleaning. They do a good job with hotel cleanliness, but apparently there's a drain problem as a musty old smell hits you when entering your room. My co-workers' rooms had the same smell so it wasn't limited to just mine on the 2nd floor.

The breakfast area is packed with too many chairs and tables in too little a space. The menu is what you'd find at any HI Express, so it's alright in that aspect. The staff is courteous and friendly. This has the smallest hotel parking lot I've ever seen. I-70 travelers will fill it up in no time since it's right out the front door. The AAA/BMV building next door monitors their parking pretty closely and will have your vehicle towed if you're not careful.

The internet is good and rooms come with a small fridge and microwave. Having the sink/mirror in your room (versus in with the bathub and toilet) strikes me as odd as 98% of the HI Expresses I've stayed in have them totally separated. No big deal though, just a little different. The fitness center is extremely cramped. The recumbent bicycle is about the only good piece of equipment in there.

Overall for one nighters you'll be ok here. I stayed for 10 nights and unfortunately my travel manager selects where we stay, so we don't have much say in the matter.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the north side away from the interstate if possible

Due to a family emergency I had to make last minute reservations over the Labor Day Weekend. When we got there late Friday evening the parking lot seemed full. Even though the hotel appeared to be full (lots of families with young children were noted), everything was running smoothly. We requested extra blankets and towels as there were 5 in our party. They were promptly provided. The pool area was clean, well cared for and the water was WARM! It is hard to get into a cold pool! The USA Today was available. Breakfast in the morning got us off to a great start with yogurt and hard boiled eggs in a minifridge to accompany the biscuits and gravy, cheese omelets, juice, bananas and warm cinnamon rolls. We had to come to town for a funeral. Everything at the hotel helped keep our stress to a minimum.

I made a mistake and booked the wrong hotel down the street, and all the hotels were booked on this weekend....I stopped in this place remembering it's where I stayed before, and they got me a room at the last minute ! What a relief ! AND the breakfast in lobby is very nice ... the same nice lady works her butt off getting stuff done!
