We visited back in early September 2012 and the family had a great time despite a lot of attractions being closed. It was actually very disappointing how many attractions were closed despite being advertised as open - even the zoo map and day's activities paper said Jack's Landing was open but it certainly wasn't and the weather was bright and sunny on Labor Day weekend.
Many of the animals were far more active than I've seen at most zoos. The brown bears were out moving around the glass viewing windows (the viewing window in to the bear cave was amazing as the bear comes right up to the glass!); the wolves were running around chasing each other right by the fence where the viewing area was located; and the penguins were shooting through the water.
We got through the zoo quickly given the number of closures and general lack of crowds but there were many animal interactions going on in the afternoon by Jack's Landing and we were among only a few in attendance. It was amazing to get THAT close to a cheetah and a fun treat to watch it play with a dog who was apparently its best friend.
If you're going to eat you have to visit the food court out in the back of the court. I don't recall the name of the sub shop they have in there but the food was fantastic - probably the best food I had ever had at zoo/theme park and the prices were extremely reasonable.
