“Great deli!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2012

This is a place the locals know about and the tourists probably overlook, but it has the best sandwiches on Catawba. I've tried nearly their entire menu and never made a bad selection.

“Women at the Helm”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2011

A fellow I knew bought a bar in Harrison, Ohio and wanted to name it Rudders because he was a manufacturers rep for a major boat company, was going to use a nautical theme in the place, but couldn't because "...somebody up North..." already had the name for their liquor license. Boy, did my jaw drop when I saw that sign. Actually, the name is Rudders Cafe which consists of two buildings, the cafe in the back and the gift shop by the road connected by a breezeway/deck with some tables for dining.
This is a family operation - mother/daughter - and open from May through Sept
Location: 3260 NE Catawba Road, which is SR53North, at Schoolhouse Road. This is about a mile south of the Miller Ferry Dock to Put-in-Bay which means that if you're heading to PIB you have to pass Rudders.
Ambiance: The cafe is nautical in theme (surprize- surprize). When you enter you're facing the deli case - turn left for tables for dining, turn right for the area with a small selection of wine, chai teas, all the neat upscale things you love to eat or drink. I found it interesting that each table had a different game with which to entertain yourself while waiting for your sandwiches which you order at the meat case. I found it interesting that I wasn't asked to pay when ordering but paid when ready to leave - not used to that level of class in a sandwich shop.
The front of the menu says, "the local gathering place" which appears to be true as two different sets of "girls" (you know, females, under age 12, or over age 40) showed up back to back after their golf league outing that morning and were warmly greeted by the owners in a manner truly consistent with being friends not just regular customers.
Menu: The menu consists of deli sandwiches, deli hot dogs, salads, small pizza, and a small selection of breakfast sandwiches in the morning plus espresso and chai teas. My wife chose the soup of the day - potato leake. Really tastey, I mean, really tastey!! Curious to know if its commercial or homemade. Don't remember the price but it was reasonable. I had the pastrami on rye, fresh rye, soft and chewey, tangey horseradish mustand and fresh pastrami - yum!! I almost went with a Catawba Dog but wasn't up for it. Pricing of the food seems to be consistent with prices in the area for similar items.
Staff: It's their place, service doesn't get any better.
Gift Shop: My wife tells me that they had an eclectic selection of goods spanning a wide variety of types of gifts including pet gifts, however, she considered the prices extremely above average.
Would we go back? To eat - yes, to shop, probably not.
